(From Our Special Correspondents.) . q . OTAKI. The annual meeting of the Otaki Road Board took place this week, when I , '. C. Jones was appointed chairman. Wardens D'Atli, Itet, and Nees took their seats tor the lirst time on the newly-constituted board. The matters of a subway near Manakau Railway Station, and a crossing at Otaki, wore discussed, and it was decided to write to the Hon. J. A. .Millar on tlie subject, in the endeavour to ascertain if something could ba done, as the crossings would be of great benefit. It was decided to do improvements to several roads at Manakau, and to make the annual rale 1-lGd. in the .£, as was the case last year. A suggestion that the overdraft be increased v.as not generally favoured. " Several local sportsmen spent Sunday night away from homo, camping on the shores of the various lakes, waiting for daylight. In some parts very good "bags" were secured, ducks being plentiful. Football commenced here on Saturday, when the local juniors and seniors indulged in practice. Junior championship matches also commenced here on Saturday. Senior contests begin on the following wepk. The following have been elected a vestry for the Paranaraumu Anglican Church: —Vicar's churchwarden, Mr. Austin; people's churchwarden, Mr. G. Smith; vestrymen, Messrs. M'Lean, Howcll, Brown, Elder, Cooper, Bennett, Corner; auditor, Mr. A. G. Williams. : The death occurred on Friday at Porirua of Mr. Conchie, who was for some time a resident of this town. Mr. T. M'Coll, who has been in business hero as a saddler for some time, leaves here shortly for the Taihape district, before recommencing business on his own account. SHANNON. The annual meeting of parishioners of the Rev. Bede's Church was held last week, when the newly-appointed vicar (Rev. C. Palmer) presided." Mr. W. 11. Gunning submitted the annual balancesheet, showing receipts for the. year XIIG ss. Id., and expenditure .£11!) 1C?. 2d., leaving a balance of £i 10s. 2d. The report was unanimously adopted. The vicar stated that Bishop Wallis had given him nearly .£lO towards a fund for the erection of a vicarage, and he read a letter received by Mr. Gunning from the Ven. Archdeacon Fancourt, which stated that «£lO had been promised by an anonymous donor towards the stipend fund, on condition that the parish provided an assessment of .£l6O. There was also a grant of .£■lo. The vicar nominated Mr. Gunning as his churchwarden, and Mr. J. W. Batchelar was elected people's churchwarden. The following vestrymen wpre elected:— Messrs. Waring-Tnylor, H. J. Knowles, C. B. Robinson, C. f. Exall, F. A. Couper, and Boultbee. Mr. Martin was appointed auditor, and Mr. Taylor was unanimously elected synodsr.ian. On Monday evening a largo gathering of residents we'eome'd the Rev. C. Palmer and fnrewellrd the Rev. Mr. Cor.ipton. Pongs and tableaux were contributed during tho evening, and refreshments were provided. Tho Rev. J. R. M'Kenzio, on behalf of tho Presbyterian Church, extended a hearty welcome to the new vicar. WOODVILLE. . Mr Gi Nicoll, formerly on the staff of the District High School, has been appointed master in charge of the Woodlands Road School. Tho installation of the Mayor (Mr. YV. G. Crawford) takes place to-day. The shooting season opened hero with io':gy and very cold mornings. A number of local residents have been out since Sunday at the different localities where ducks'arc supposed to be plentiful, but no large bags.are reported. The fears of farmers that there would be a "rent shortage of feed hero during tho winter bid fair to vanish. After the recent rains the country is putting on a i'resh and green appearance, and tho grass is coming away nicely. Those who have recently sown winter feed state that the growth has been excellent. CARTERTON. Following is the substance of tho annual report of the Wairarana Terrninatin» Building Society to be presented at the annual meeting on Thursday evening; -Tho number of shares allotted is 161, of which 201 are issued under tho amcimcd rule 25, leaving a balance ot 13b shares still unallotted. During tho past year no shares have been forfeited, as against 97 the nrevious year, and altkougn the profits iiro less accordingly, yet w» prefer this in place o£ having to forfeit members' interests in the society.- The profit and loss account shows a credit balance of .SIS 3 ss. Gd., on increaso of .£29 11s. 10d. for the year's working. This amount may appear small, but we must take into consideration the fact that the society has successfully passed through a critical period in its history, viz., th , . , quinquennial period, when members had the opportunity of withdrawing their subscriptions, 40 having availed themselves of tho opnortuiiity, representing the sum of .f.ll7'B' Is. Five appropriations worn made during the year (four for ,€3OO, and 011 a for ,£150), two by ballot and threo by sale, the premiums on sales amounting to =£118 55., being J?G ss. in advance of last year. The milk suppliers to the Belvedere Co-operative Dairy Company are arranging to form a cow-testing association. The Wairarapa South County Council has decided to pipe ]Sft. of the raco over Norfolk Road, "in order to expedite the droving of fat sheep. A case of enteric fever has been reported to the Wairarana South County Council from Flat Point. GREYTOWN. Ths first meeting of the new Borough Council was held on Monday evening. The Mayor (Mr. D. Y. Loasby) was in Hie chair, and welcomed the new councillors. An application by Messrs. Haigh and Sons for a new slaughterhouse license was granted. An application from Mr. F. V. Kempton for permission to fell certain trees en the road lino was also granted. Receipts for the month ivero reported as Is. Id. (of which Jill 10s. came from tho Town Hall revenue). The bank over- ■ draft 'stands at present a_s ,£252 12s. 3d. A complaint was received in reference to horses being on the road after dark, and also regarding vehicles and cycles going through the town at night without lights. It was decided that the police should be communicated with regarding these complaints. The Gas Committee reported that there wcro now 50 applicants for connection to tho gas mains. A motion was carried empowering; the Gas Committee to erect a shop to exhibit gas material. Tha Mayor reported that the gasometer would be delivered in about a month's time, and tho gas manager was instructed. to call for tenders for (ho erection of same. The Mayor and Councillors Ti'otman, Kcmipion, and V.'ebster were appointed a committee to go into the matter of a park reserve.
