NOTES AND COMMENTS. • [By Glencoe.] According to a cable received in Wellington yesterday, tho Hurdle race at Raudwiclc on Saturday should have been won by Pakau. The Conqueror marc has since changed hands for 250 guineas. After being placed on board the I'ateena yesterday, the two-year-old Aloha played up badly, and knocked herself about so much that her trainer took her off the steamer again, and railed her to Porirua. At the conclusion of the Wellington meeting, the Quariynvan [illy Khamsin, winner of the Pluuket Nursery ■Handicap, was sold to the local sportsman, "Mr. Lance Wood," for 250 guineas. At the price named the speedy half-sister to Vladimir is very cheap, and should soon repay her owner for his outlay. She .goes into W. Davies's stables at 'I'rcn- \ ha ill, and will make her first appearance in her new owner's colours at Hastings next week. i R. J. Mason leaves for Hastings this morning with Vice-Admiral and Mazurka. The former is engaged in tho Hawke's Bay Cup, and tho latter in the Nursery Handicap, while both have been paid up for in the Hawke's Bay Stakes, run on the second day of the meeting. There aro still some "big" bookmakers left in England. A few nights prior to the running of the Lincolnshire. Handicap last month, a bet of <£11,000 to ,£2OOO was laid against Spanish Prince in one hand, and ,£IOOO to .CSOO for a place. Spanish Prince, who cost Jlr. J. li. Joel JMOQ9, eventually finished third. which sailed for Picton yesterday, tho following horses were shipped to take part in tho Marlborough meeting, which opens to-morrow: —Bracken,- Septimus, First Consul; Zealand, Tumut, Gunboat, Kilosteri, Directoire, Allurement, Hilarian, Laius, Inveran, Ahuapai, Splash, and Mataari. S. Rcid will ride Tumut in the Flying Handicap at Riverlands to-morrow. Tho Merriweo gelding should either run very prominently or very poorly,, as, after the Suburban Handicap on Saturday, ho was greatly distressed. Accordingly (and a bit of a paradox to state), tho' race will Vlo him a lot of good or it may do him harm. Kilosteri was sent to Blenheim yesterday in charge of A. Oliver, who will ride liini nt. tho Marlborough meeting.. Trainer Geo. Price returned to Awapunj, aud leaves next Saturday for Hastings with Boanerges and Nyland, both of which will run at the Autumn meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club. Directoire, .who will carry Mr. C!.. D. Greenwood's colours in the Marlborough Cup, was sent across the Strait yesterday in charge cf I'. .Mason. She is to be ridden by the apprentice, A. Stratford. The two-year-old Harrigan, by Spalpeen —Epingle, owned by the North Shore sportsman who races under the namo of Mr. G. Crciner, died recently. Harrigan, although lie had not succeeded in winning a race, gave promise of being .m'oro than useful, and his loss is a severe ono for his owner. IT. Cutts (in charge of tho Chokebore fillies, Terebinth and Madam Madcap) goes to Hastings by the. mail train to-day. I'. Mason, a very prominent English steeplechase ■ jockey, when ho won tho Rossmore Welter Flat Raco at llootou Park last month, scored his only success on tho flat for I he past fifteen years. In connection with the Marlborough laces, a special steamer service has been arranged by which a boat will leave hero at midnight to-night for Picton. A return steamer will leave f'ie.lon lor Wellington after tho races on Thursday evening. Weights for minor events on tho first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting are not due until May 19. Acccpt-i-.iices for the first day's evcnls close o:i May '22. Mr. Donald M'Lcod, the well-known Auckland sportsman, who attended tho Wellington Racing Club's meeting, returned. home yesterday. A. Robertson, the Ellcrslie trainer, was present at the .Trcntham races last week, and left yesterday for a visit to relatives in Wangauui. Contorp and Takau, who ran first and sccorid in the Hurdle Race at Sydney on Saturday, were both bred by lir. J. R. M'Donald. Commenting on Lady Medallist's form at Randwick, "Pilot." in the Sydney "Referee," says:—Lady Medallist ran so well in the Autumn .Stakes that she was naturally expected to give a good account of liersolf in the All-Aged Stakes, but she shaped indifferently in that, and oven worse in tho I-'iinl Handicap, for which she. was also solidly backed. She did a good deal of racing this season prior to leaving New Zealand, and presuinably that is telling upon her. Trafalgar, who . annexed the A.J.C. Plate in the record time of smin. 221 sec. on Saturday, is the fourth representative ot w.f.a. forni to subscribe his name to the. list of winners of that event on more than one occasion. Other dual winners were La Carabine anil Chester; hut Carbine holds the honour of having won it in three successive years, viz., ISS9, INUi and 1891. 11. Smith, who steered Trafalgar on Salurdav, was previously successful in this race on Merloolas in 1899, when the value of the slake to the winner was only ,0391), as compared to the 110J sovs. of last Saturday's event. According to a cable appearing in "The Asian" (Calcutta), the Liverpool Grand National was a most exlraordinarv race, the winner, Glenside, being the only cue of the 20 runners who did not make, a mistake of some kind. Hathnnlly, Sliadv Girl, and Foolhardy, who finished second, tliird, and fourth respectively, all fell, anil wero rc-mountcd. Glenside, tvho war, nt a good price a few days before the race, receded, while the French horse, Lutteur 111, started favourito. Shortiv before the lalc«t papers to hand left England a well-known jockey, who walkad round the Grand National course, raised a scars among his fellow-riders by announcing that it had been made sliffoY than on pirvious occasion?. This, however. was denied, but the result of the recent race suggests that the alterations 1 really did make the course more difficult

than mis fcrmcrlv the can 1 . Anyhow, it will now lie difficult In convinco the public nnil (ill' riders olhcrusic. Mr. .1. V. Williamson, of tliralriir>! note, Ims imported it San Tuv filly. which he purchased from .Mr. George lidw;i when in lOmiiund recently. The two-year-old has boon named "Tho (Juakfr Girl, after the musical comedy in which bnth its puiTha.-er and vendor arc interested at the Adelphi. FIXTURES. Mav 3 and 4—Marlborouph K.C. Autumn.
