CHILD'S DRESS CATCHES FIRE. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.! . Maslerton, May 1. A' painful accident t-ccurred at Mauriceville on Saturday afternoon. A little girl, eight years of age, daughter of Mrs. E. Jacobsen, was standing with her back to a fire, when liL-r clothes ignited. She rushed out of the house, and the mother, who was milking, ran to her assistance, and succeeded in extinguishing the flames. Tho child was badly burnt about the body, and the mother about the hands. TRAGEDY AT LAKE WAIRARAPA. Featherston, May 1. News was received here to-night that two men had been drowned in a lagoon of tho lake about four miles from Featherston. One of the unfortunate men was James Peperill, and the other a young man-—a relative. It is stated that their boat was capsized a few yards from tho shore in a deep channel^ DAZED BY FALL AND OVERTAKEN BY THE TIDE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Nelson, May 1. The body of Mr. Charles Lamb, a wellknown resident of tho city, was found on the beach -at Tahuna this afternoon. It appears that, whilo cycling along tho Bocks Road yesterday afternoon, Mr. Lamb met with a serious accident His bicycle skidded, and he was thrown over a parapet on to tho rocks about nine fret below. First aid whs rendored by a passer-by, and Mr. Lamb seemed to have recovered sufficiently" to be left. Ho was seen walking about the beach later in the afternoon, but he failed to return home, and a 1 search was instituted. ■It is surmised that Mr. liamb was dazed by the fall, and subsequently lost consciousness, and was overtaken by the incoming tide. He leaves a widow and threo grown-up sons. Deceased was about to leavo Nelson,- having purchased a business at Wanganui. UNAVAILING SEARCH. Nelson, May 1. A young man named Felix Fry, a resident of Motuelta, has been missing since Friday, and there is reason to fear that he has been drowned in tho Motueka River. A 1 search has, so far, been un-. availing. CYCLIST CAUGHT BY TAXI-CAB. Invercargill, May 1. On Saturday night Arthur W. Mitchell, a shop-assistant, while riding a bicycle on- North Road, was run down by a taxicab approaching from the rear. Mitchell sustained a fractured skull and other injuries, which proved fatal. Both cyclist and taxi-cab wero on their right side of the road. FELL OFF WIIARF AT THAMES. Thames, May 1. The body recently found in the Thames River has been identified as that of John Thomas Browne, aged 03, a resident of Waihi, who left that town to attend tho Auckland races at Easter. He promised to telegraph to his relatives when he arrived at Thames, but did not do so, and it-is presumed he fell off the wharf at Thames, and the body was carried by the tide to where it was found. PLAYING WITH POWDER. , Gisborne, May 1. A lad named James Walsh was seriously injured about the eyes while playing with gunpowder. v TRAM LINESMAN INJURED. Mark Aiken, a single man, 30 years of age, employed as a linesman in the Tramways Department, met with an accident while working on'the repair wagon and had several ribs fractured. He is now on inmate of tho Hospital. SLIPPED ON THE GANGWAY. Oue of the Rotorua's passengers, named Dickerson, slipped on 'the gangway of the vessel yesterday, and injured his leg.. Tho accident necessitated his removal to tho Hospital. • KILLED INSTANTANEOUSLY. Auckland, May 1. While in the act of peering dora the lift well from the second floor of Smith and Caughey's drapery establishment this afternoon William ■ Brewer, aged 16, of Grey Lynn, employed hs parcel boy, was struck on the head by a descending lift and killed instantaneously. The entrance to the.lift, w;hich was used for.-the conveyance of parcels, was only guarded by ono bir. FAINTING FIT IN STREET. A lady, residing in Adelaide Road, had a fainting fit on Lambton Quay yesterday morning, and, falling, injured her head. She was removed to the Hospital for treatment.
