THE KING AND A HERO.
PRESENTED WITH; GOLD MEDAL • .FOE RESCUE-AT SEA. The King on .March -23 received at Buckingham Palace a deputation from the Royal Humane Society, of which his Majesty is patron, and pres;nted the society s Stanhope gold medal to Chief Engineer Frank Frasar, of the Aberdeen trawler Donside, for a gallant rescue at sea. The .rescue for which Mr. Fraser was Iwardcd the racial is described in the Court Circular as follows:— "At 0.30 a.m. on August 27, 1910, the Aberdeen trawler Donside was fishing on the Viking Bankj about 225 miles northeast by cast of Aberdeen. Although it was blowing hard with a heavy sea running , the captain decided to shoot the trawl, and when he thought everything ■was clear shouted to let go, but unfortunately the deck hand, John Fraser, was standing on a part of the net, and was carried over the side of tho vessel. "Hearing the shouting on deck tho chief engineer, Frank Fraser; rushed up from below and instantly leapt overboard and managed to reach the man, both then drifting to windward. There being a light in the after rigging the men could be seen, and a rope was thrown which the chief engineer succeeded in grasping, but his hands being greasy with oil from tho engine-room ho had the utmost difficulty in retaining his hold and continually slipped back. "It was only after fifteen minutes', patient work that both were got safely on board, the salvor being much bruised from knocking against the -side of the vessel. Extreme risk was incurred, the night being pitch dark and the sea very rfingh." Tho rescued man was the rescuer's brother, '
