"TRUST" SCARES.
"THE SWORD OF CAPITAL."The London correspondent of a South Island paper writes:—"l wonder what New Zeaiandcrs really think of all tho shouts and alarms' that £11 tho air, or rather the press, over 'Jleat Trust' scares. The latest volley began with the announco of the award of an Army Meat Contract to Swift's, alongside which came a newspaper report about American, efforts to acquire Australian meat freezing interests. It all made a pretty tale for tho press, of course, and both tho Australian. Minister of Customs and the Prime Minister of New Zealand were well within their rights in making tho-formal announcement that attempts on the part of tho American Trust to secure a foothold in their territory would be promptly arid severely quashed. "Yet both of these Ministers must know full well that this was not the only end of the stick. The war waged by the Americans has its greatest execution in the country of consumption, and it is the gradual seizure of tho markets in tho United Kingdom which the Americans, with their enormous and perfect organisation, their careful and admirable methods of preparation and handling, and their relentless strategy, are most intent upon. If it were sources of supply they wanted to corner, they have just, missed a chance in Smith America, where, T. hear, tho Sansincraa, Co. has just ontbid Swift's with £100,000. against ,£2!)0,000, for tho purchase of the Frigorifico Uruguayo, .besides which it is reported that a British concern is to proceed to erect freezing works under a concession Obtained at Zarate. "A special correspondent of the London 'Times' argues that the Americans cannot gain the monopoly they are said to seek unless they gain pos?ession of all tho sources of supply in the Argentine, an argunnnt the soundness of which 1 question. It seems to me that the party wielding the most powerful ?word of capita! must win, especially if he be backed by a uniformity of methods and organisation, which the Americans seem to use to their immense advantage everywhere. At any rate, it all seems to point to very cheap meat, and the only deliverance to prevent the exporters' apple-cart upsetting on this road is more markets."
