Nellie Waghorn has had the distinction conferred upon her of being the first' person against whom tho provisions of Sfction i of last session's Crimes Act Amendment Act has been put in operalion. For two months post complaints have been reaching tho police that a young woman, styling her/elf a medical student, has been obtaining board . anil lodgings from various landladies by means of false pretences, and, while availing herself of their hospitality, has been annexing any money or articles of attire Hut camo to hand. From tho description Riven uf the girl, Detectives Ward, nnd Gibson, who had the rase in hand, knew that sho was a Nellie Wagliorn, who had been previously convicted of theft. Despite, their vigilance she managed to cludo thoai until yesterday, when they happened to catch sight of her while they were sitting on a tramcar. Thev imm«diat"ly alighted from tho car, ana arrested tho youn» woman, who appeared at the Court before Mr. IT. W. Bishop, R.M.. this morning on a charge of falfo pretences, and five charges iif theft of amount* raneing from 7s. Cd. to •£.">. Mr. Donnelly, who appeared on behalf of accused, entered a plea of guilty. Accused was convicted on all the charges, and on the major chs.rge—the. theft of JCS—was ordered to Ik detained in prison for i-eform purposes for a, period of two years.
