FLAMES SMOTHERED BY WHEAT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, April 30. An outbreak of fire in the grain store at "Wood Bros.' mill at Addington was discovered about 10 o'clock tins morning. A carter in the firm's employ, whilst talcing his horses to water, noticed smoke ing from the grain store, and immediately telephoned an alarm to the fire brigade, which was soon on the scene. On filtering the-grain store it was discovered that some empty sacks lincl got alight by some unknown means, and that the flames had spread to the ends of some full sacks, with the result that the wheat had been released and poured down on the. burning empty sacks and so smothered tho ilaines and kept them under control lo a large extent. The brigade got out the burning sacks, and made certain that there was no danger of further damage. Comparatively no damage was done to (he structure, which is a two-story brick and iron building.
