BUTTER AND MARGARINE.

A BATTLE PENDING. The fight between the makers of butter and the makers of margarine always seems to bo an interesting topic in New Zealand. "When tho last mail left America it was considered .that tho extra session of Congress was liable to precipitate the battle between the oleomargarine interests and the friends of pure butter, which otherwise Would not have- come until next winter. "The olco-margarino people fully realise that they aro losing ground (says an article in "Hoard's Dairyman") nnd that nothing can be gained by delay. The consumers of tho country will not become excited over tho pries of butter, and cannot be fooled into the belief that the ten cent tax on artificially-col-oured oleo-margarine makes'" butter

higher in price. They cannot bo fooled into thinking that the millionaire packers arc so unselfish as to spend thousands of dollars just to help the consuming public. ... It is possible that should the new Congress attempt a wholesale revision of the tariff another attempt similar to the one made two vears ago will be niado to attach an amendment to one of the tariff schedules repealing the present law. They will be closely watched, however, and such action will only precipitate tho real fight."
