SCIENTIST IN DANGER.
POISONOUS FUMES. IBy Telegraph.—Press Association.! Auckland, April 28. An analytical chemist, Mr. S. C. Priestley, who lias his laboratory situated on the top floor of a building in Goro Street, had a very narrow escape from a serious injury to-day through the bursting of a retort containing a compound of phosphorus. Mr. Priestley was preparing rat poison, and during the course of his work 1 a retort containing phosphorus and other chemicals, which was standing over a Bunsen burner, exploded. Tho receptacle was smashed to atoms, flying in all directions, whilst dense fumo3 immediately enveloped tho room. Mr. Priestley was at the time sitting with his back to tho retort. He received a slight burn, and thepoisonous gases almost overpowered him. When he attempted to escape from tho room, tho density of tho fumes caused him to mistake the whereabouts of tho door. Tho timely appearance of a young man probably saved his life, tho sound of the man's voice enabling him to got out of the room.
