JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
(By Telegraph.—Sneeial Correspondent.) Wanganui, April 28. The completed returns of tho Harbour Board election in "Wanganui County show that Mr: W. J. Poison (formerly editor of a Christchurch evening paper), and Mr. J. 0. Paterson (a member of the old board) havo been elected. Both aro against any further loans at present. An examination of the personnel of the new board shows that seven, and possibly ,eight, members aro in favour of going on with bigger harbour works while tho anti-loan party cannot, for certain, count on moro than three votes.
The annual report of the Wanganui Beautifying Society states that during tho past year a largo amount of splen-. did work- was accomplished. The society begins this- year with a credit balance of £430, a large amount of which-will be spent in this season's planting. • In addition tho Wanganui Borough Council has promised labour to tho value of £300 for tho year. _ Registration for military training is now beginning to bo brisk, and Lioutenant Hume, officer in chargo of the Manawatu group, reports that tho area-sergeant-major at Wanganui has received 300 applications for enrolment in two clays in Wanganui.
In consequonco of heavy rains inland during the past few days there is a heavy fresh in tho river. Advices from Tipiriki, 56 miles up tho river, state that tho river is running very high there, while in town to-day the water was up to tho bracings of tho bridge. Nothing jn tho naturo of a disastrous flood is anticipated, however, though much will depend on the weather inland during tho next few hours.
