THE ANTARCTIC.
AMUNDSEN'S EXPEDITION. ."TOO HARD A STRAIN." •gy Teleiraph—Press Association— Oosyricfct (R-ec. April 271 0.15 a.m.) London, April 26. Professor Nansen, in a letter to 'The Times" on Captain Amundsen's Antarctic expedition, says an unfair act of any kind would be entirely alien to Captain Amundsen's character. Captain Amundsen, in a letter to him, amplified what was previously cabled, and added that Peary's success led to the withdrawal of support from the North Pole expedition. He stated that he was not landing near Captain Scott's expedition. Professor Nansen remarks: "Had I known of his change of plan I might have warned him it would be too hard a strain to first proceed on a' trying South Polar expedition, and then straightway to a drift- voyage across the North Polar basin, calculated to occupy five years. ' The two bases are far apart, and both explorers way supplement each other's discoveries^'
