BORROWED THE CREW'S WAGES.
U.S.S. CO.'S SEIiVANT OWNS UP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! Dunedin, April 2G. In the Police Court this morning, Arthur Robert James Cant, master mariner, who had charge of the Union Steam Ship Company's labour department, was charged with'stealing .£llß 175., the property of the company. The ease showed some remarkable features. It appeared that accused was in financial difficulties, and in order to pay pressing accounts used money which had been given him to pay off the crew of the lvoromiko. Detective Ward said that accused had called at the I J olice Station, and had stated that he wished to give himself in charge because he had stolen .£IOO belonging to the Union Company. Accused signed a statement, and handed witness ,£l6 odd. Witness and others testified that accused bore ail excellent character. Accused's solicitor asked for bail, but the magistrate indicated that, in accordance with the recent decision of a Su-. premo Court Judge, this was not a ease in which he would be free to allow bail if accused pleaded guilty. Accused then reserved his defence, was committed for trial, and bail was allowed.
