A resolution was passed at the Labour Party's Conference in Christchurch (after Mr. M'Laren had left on his return to Wellington), "That this conference of the Now Zealand Labour Party extends its hearty thanks and appreciation to Mr. D. M'Laren, M.P., in recognition of his services to Labour in Parliament sinco his election in 1908."

Mr. Justice Sim is relieving Mr. Justico Cooper on the Court of Appeal bench. Mr. Justice Cooper- will leave for Lyttelton on Thursday on his way to England.

Mr. Charles C'alder Robertson, of tho Telegraph staff, whose death was recorded yesterday, was born at Airdrie, near Glasgow, Scotland, oil January JC, 1849. Ho came to New Zealand and joined the Telegraph Service as a cadet at Duuedin on January 1,18G7. He was appointed in charge of the Mastcrton office on November 1, 18(38, and removed to the charge of the Napier office oii January 1, 1869. Thence he went to White's Bay, which was at that time the principal transmitting office of tho South Island, taking charge on September 1, 1871, returning to Wellington and taking charge of tho office in the Government Buildings on February 1, 1874. Ho was promoted to officer in charge, Wellington, on Juno 1, 1878—a position which he held with marked success until his further promotion as Inspector of . Telegraphs, Nelson district, on September 8, 1900, from which position he was again promoted to take charge of the. telegraph engineer's district, Wellington, on July 1, 1009. Mr. Robertson was, perhaps, the best known telegraph officer in the Dominion, being a thoroughly practical man of a genial, kindly disposition, but withal a strict disciplinarian. Not only his immediate subordinates worn, impressed by his character, but his influence was felt throughout the whole of the service and the mention of his name was always received with respect by his fellow telegraph officers. In tho welding of a grout Department into a practical business working concern the telegraph branch owes much to liis labours, arid almost every officer now serving in responsible positions at one timo or other was under his tuition and charge.
