HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
_ The curtain fell on the present Hutt Borough Council! last night when their final meeting was held. • Those present were: The Mayor air.'' E. P. .Bunny), and Councillors Baldwin/. Macaskill, 'Roots, Hayes,Kempthornb" Peafce, Ha wthorh, Clore, and |)r. .'Anson. .:'. '' '■ The Hutt River Board; writing in reference to ...the : water-main' along' r '-tli'e .stop bank,- stated-that the matter, was now in the hands of their'solicitors. ■Mr. IY. Johnston applied to" have a surface drain laid in the Vicinity of his property in Victoria Street,. Alicetowh. —Resolved to■reply that tho'cbuncil was prepared to allow Mr. Johnston to connect'th'o drain provided that he paid the cost of'the- work. On behalf of the owners of the Avery Estate Mr. Brcchbn applied for a water connection to the estate. It was pointed out that the' estate was on the border of the borough, and really in the Hutt County. Councillor -Baldwin suggested that the application bo granted, and that tho water bo put through .a meter, and charged accordingly. Eventually ' it .was decided' to inform-.the 'apphcants that as' soon as' tho* water service had -been, p.qt.,011. a .satisfactory basis the .application- would' lie '"considered. *■.:'■*■•',• /;'■-:*;; :,u -.':: iv. •:-;•■ :■ ■': -Mr;; Raskin - wrote stating that - the surface water 'round his residence fras becoming a nuisance. Councillor" .Baldwin said that tho work should bo gone on with at once. He would move that the engineer bo instructed to '• call''for tenders for the work. •. . Councillor Kcmpthorno moved as.an amendment that the matter bp ' held over for the new. council.. ' Councillor Baldwin moved: "That no tender for drainage bo accepted for Section No. 2 until members of the. council have fuller information as to tho reason why it is necessary to depart from tho plans of Mr. Meason for'the samo section."" • •.
A lengthy explanation on this matter *vas read from the engineer. ' Councillor Baldwin expressed satis-faction-at the engineer's ' statement . of the position, ami the motion lapsed."
At the close of the mooting, the Mayor bade' farewell to Councillor Macaskill, who was, lie said, not 1 contesting the : election; Ho thanked Councillor Macaskill for his services.
