e ■- FIRST RUN OF THE HOUNDS. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, April 21. The first "meet" of the season in connection with the AYairarapa Hunt was held at Opaki on Thursday afternoon in ideal hunting weather. The "drag" was laid by Mr. AY. H. Duick, on Firestick. Huntsman T. Smith had tho pack in good condition, and some excellent work was done during tho afternoon. Among tho followers were Messrs. C. F. Vallanco (Master), on Oakley; Jas. Smith, on-Grot; H. FalJoon, on Frolic; AV. Lett, on Laddie; A. AYatson, on Sylvia Maid; F .Can;, on Moutoa; C. AYestmoreland, on Minota; 11. Miller, on Destroyer; Norman Moore, on Hatuata; A\\ H. Garrett, on Daisy Bell; and G. . AY. M'Kay, on Foal. Tho next run with the hounds takes place at Clareville on May 4. Although rain lias been falling at intervals during the past week, the earth has not been penetrated '■ to a great depth, and a good deal more moisture would bo acceptable. About 40 points of rain was registered last night. An officer of tho Public AYorks Department visited Masterton yesterday to in-i spect the' site for the proposed new police station, lock-up, and residence. The competitors in the Wellington motor reliability trial will pass through Masterton at about 3.30 to-morrow afternoon. Mr. G. A. Donovan, a well-known and popular young settler of Kopuaranga, who is leaving for Gisborne, was last night entertained by the settlers of tho district, and presented with an illuminated address, a pair of field-glasses, a silver whisky flask, and a handsome, silver-mounted walking-stick. Addresses were given by Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.P., and others. \ The voting power in the forthcoming Harbour Board election in tho AA'airarapa is as follows: —Counties, 3534; town districts, 780; boroughs, 6205: total, 10,519. _ Five typhoid fever patients aro at present under treatment in the Masterton.Hospital. Tho whole of them came from outside districts. The Easter pairs tournament was concluded on tho Masterton bowling green yesterday, when Cole and Chapman defeated Prentice and Chamberlain by 1" to 16, after an exciting game. The trout-fishing season, which has been a very poor one so far as Masterton anglers aro concerned, terminates on April 30. At a meeting of tho council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce this afternoon it was suggested that a monster petition be prepared in the district extending from AYcllington to Napier, praying that provision be made by Parliament for a deviation of the Rimutaka railway. Tho matter was referred to a sub-committee for report. The annual meeting of the Masterton Amateur Theatrical Societv was held this evening. Mr. G. C. Branson was elected secretary, and the transaction of other business was deferred for a future meeting. Several parents were fined in the Magistrate's Court to-day for failing to send their children to school.
