APPLE EXPORTING.

AND FAST PACKING. A Wellington man interested in the ■ fruit business told a Dominion representative . yesterday .that it seems certain that if tho trial shipment of :.Nelson apples which has been exported to England gives encouraging results, i other districts of the South Island will. •bs exporting next 3'ear. Ho remarked '.on tho great areas that had been laid . down in young orchards in Nelson and | Marlborough, and said that five years ' hence the quantity of apples and other .fruit availablo would bo very great. At the recent horticultural show at ■Motucka, he said, an exhibition .of apple-packing was given by Mr. Rolands, who is an expert packer, and was formerly in the employ of tho Tasmanian Government. Mr. Rolands is now with one of tho New Zealand firms, and one of his chief duties is showing growers the art of- packing. His work is described as a revelation in comparison with what tho ordinary orcbardist docs. At the show ho graded, wrapped, and packed fortypound cases, and The Dominion's informant states that the times were marvellously fast. The apples when packed wero so firm that a side or a top could be taken off a case and the case shaken without the fruit moving.

A Queensland paper says there, is an increasing inclination on tho part of tho Queensland farmers with pigs for sale to sail them at auction. This has led to t'hc establishment of an auction sale at almost every railway town in Southern Queensland.
