THE BASIN RESERVE.
Sir,—l see. an nrticlo in this morning's Dominion, under the heading "The Writing on the Wall," in which Mr. .lames (lodbcr, a city councillor, forecasts, and presumably approves of, the cutting up of absolutely the only reserve available in the city for cricket or sports meetings, so that the trams can save about two minutes in their running between Newtown and the city. Wellington is particularly unfortunate in the matter of playing grounds, and sadly needs more of the sympathetic assistance moled out to it when Dr. Newman was in the Mayoral chair. ' This insane and shortsighted idea of cutting' up the Basin liescrvc has a nasty habit of raising its head periodically, and it is. sincerely to be honed that at the forthcoming municipal elections the public will recognise the shortsightedness that has prompted Mr. James G'oduer to champion a scheme which has long since been cast aside and condemned by people who can see far enough ahead to knowthat the cutting up of the Hescrve would lie little short of a calamity to Wellington. In conclusion, I should like to sav that I hope Mr. Godber will entertain the samo uneasy feeling that afflicted our old friend Belshazzar when lie road a certain message on the wall.—l am, etc., MF.NE MEXE TEKEL.
