MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) ALLEGED SERIOUS ASSAULT. William John Carpenter, a storeman on R.M.S. 'J'ainui, was charged with assaulting Nicholas Normile on Thursday, thereby causing him actual bodily barm. Mr. I'. W. Jackson appeared for accused. Sub-Inspector Sheehan stated that Normile was at present an inmate'of the hospital, suffering from a broken jaw, and it would therefore bo necessary to ask for a remand until April ! 28. The remand was granted, defendant's counsel to bo also granted a remand, if necessary, when the case is next called. Bail was allowed in £50 and one surety of £50. ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE. Five duly articled seamen oTT R.M.S. Tainui were charged with absenting themselves from their ship without leave. Their names wore Thomas Jenkins, James Lowe, Robert Pollard, John White, and James Clancy. All five pleaded guilty, and wero convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence when called on, each to pay costs of summons, a fifth share of cab hire (65.1, and solicitor's feo (£1 Is.). Mr. W. H. D. Bell appeared for tho owners of the vessel. THEFT OF BOOTS. George Harris, alias Gentry, was brought forward for sentence on a charge of stealing two pairs of boots, valued at- 305., tho property of Daniel Coronno. There was a second chargo (on a different date) of theft of one pair of boots. To this accused had pleaded not guilty, but, after evidence had been heard, he was convicted. As he had not previously been convicted of dishonesty, and had already spent seven days in gaol, tho magistrate ordered him to come up for isenteneo when called on, provided that, he refunded 4s. 6d., the amount for which ho had disposed of ono of the pairs of boots. REMANDED. Florence Agnes Swinard and -William. Francis Clark were charged with stealing goods, valued at £10, tho property of Joseph Ormr'od, between February 13 and March 13. The accused Florence Swinard pleaded guilty, and Clark not guilty. Both cases were remanded until April 28, each accused being admitted to bail in the sum of £25 and one surety of £25. MAINTENANCE. In tho caso of William Beck, charged with disobedience of a maintenanceorder, it was reported that, since 'the last adjournment, defendant had deduced the arrears by £10. He was granted a further adjournment till May 19 in order that the arrears might bo further reduced. FAILED TO PAY TRAM' FARE. For failing to pay his tram faro on demand, F. E. Bailey was lined Cs., with court costs 155., witnesses' r-x----ponses 165.., and solicitor's fee, £1 Is. Default was fixed at three days' imprisonment. WANDERING STOCK. For allowing ■ stock to wander, Edward Bloomfield and G. Bradley were each fined 205., and costs 7s. For similar offences, ,tho following defendants were each fined 10s. and court costs:—James Bradley, C. Greig, Thomas Peterson, and Georgo''Bradnock. Tho following were fined ss. and court costs:—Henry Chandler, William Jenkins, Albert Macdonald, A. Hare, Oscar Neilson, Ngnn Koe and Co., James O'Shca, William Wilkinson, AVilliam L. Ludwig, Thomas Patrick Lyons, Oscar Swenson, Richard Ji hn Tarr, and Mrs. Alico Wickman. Tho following were ordered to pay court costs,:—Charles Bailey, Joiiii Peach, Henry G. Simpson, and "William Lewis Ludwig. UNREGISTERED DOGS. A large number of defendants woio proceeded against for failing to register dogs. ' ' • Tho ■ following wero fined 55., end court costs:—Charles Thomas Emcny, Edward Side, George Fernairbs, and Ernest Thomas. Tho following were ordered to pay court costs only:—Henry linrreit, Sydney Billows, Thomas John Gregory, Frank George, Sydney Loft, diaries Montgomery, John M'llwraith, and Michael Quinii. VAGRANCY. Jessie M'Cormack pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and to a further charge of being a regno and a vagabond with insufficient lawful means of support. For the first offenco she was fined 205., with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment, and, for the second, she was sentenced to throe months' imprisonment. Charles Joseph Little, against whom there were numerous convictions for drunkenness, was before ' the Magistrate again yesterday on a chargo of being a roguo and a vagabond, ho haviiiK, keen found begging alms in Tinalcori Road. Accused pleaded guilty, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on. PROHIBITED PERSONS. John Chambers pleaded guilty to a charge cf drunkenness, and to a further charge of procuring liquor during tho currency of a prohibition order. For the first offence he was convicted and discharged while, for tho second, he was fined 405., with the option of seven days' imprisonment. Richard Goss, for whom Mr. C. R. Dix appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge 'of hai'jng entered licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order. He was fined 4.05., with costs 75., in default seven days' imprisonment. Faced with five charges of breach of a prohibition order, William Haydon pleaded guilty and was penalised in iir.es, costs, and expenses, totalling in all £6 18s. OTHER CASES. William Ncwcomhe, alias Jeffs, alias O'Rorke, charged with drunkenness, was fined 10s. with the alternative of 48 'hours' imprisonment. Threo first-of-fending inebriates were lined 55., with tho alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment. Another first offender was convicted and discharged. For leaving a vehicle unattended for more than live minutes. Thomas Broughton was fined 10s., with costs 95., and witness's expenses 3s. JUVENILE COURT.:' A youth 10 years of age was before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. in the Juvenile Court yesterday afternoon charged with stealing a horse a.nd cart valued £20, tho.property of John Barnard. It appeared that tho lad left his homo on Wednesday last and, en Thursday, he took chargo of a grocery cart that was standing outside the mart near Courtenay Placo and drove it out to Lower Hutt. On arrival thero lie was accosted- by a resident, who evidently considered th.it something was wrong. Eventually,-the lad was taken to the police station and, as-hc refused to give his corrcct'address, tho Lamb ton Police Station was communicated with. By that time tho cart had been reported missing, and so tho boy was taken into custody. Yesterday ho was convicted and ordered to reccivo five strokes of tho birch, and to bo sent, to the Wereroa Training Farm, his parents to contribute 3s. a week towards his maintenance, -..
