THE PUHIPUHI MURDER.
FURTHER DETAILS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Whangarci, April 21. Further details of the Puhipuhi murder are now to hand. With Tahi Kaka in close custody, the police travelled into tho heart of the bush over precipitous tracks to a deep gully, down which Kaka confessed having thrown tho body after murdering Freeman with a stick on the ridgo above, whilo tho victim was engaged gum-digging. Tho murder occurred on April 5. Kaka showed no concern, and offered to help the polico in their gnicsomo duties. The remains were placed on an improvised stretcher and convoyed to Hikiirangi, and thence into Whangarci by train. The prisoner was brought down at tho same time. Tahi Kaka was to-day formally charged with the wilful murder of oohii Freeman at Puhipuhi on April o. An inquest was opened to-day. The medical evidence was to the effect that deceased's head was off the trunk, that the bone at the back of the iicad had been pulverised, and that somo portions were missing. One arm had dropped off from decay. There was not a particle of flesh on the skull. The injuries would cause almost instantaneous death. The inquest was adjourned till Monday next.
