rOI'ULARITY OF THE MAYOR. (From Our Special CorresDondent.l . Palmorston, April 21. lho Friendly Societies' Council of the district held its annual meeting last night, Bro. J. Ax presiding. The balance-sheet allowed tne council to bo in a sound position. Jt was arranged that tilt inter-lodge euchre tournament should begin on May .], tho drawings being as lollow:—Orient v. Druids, Hibernians v. Oddfellows, Foresters a bye. A challenge shield was donated for competition by the Druids Lodge lor cribbagc and eucliro matches on ordinary meeting lights of the Orders, the lollowmg officers wore elected:— 1 resident, Mr. AY. Duthie; vice-presi-dent, Bro. F. Jackson; secretary,-Bro. I'. AY. I'ettett; treasurer, Bro. G. Allman; trustee, Bro. AY. S. AYoodroofe; auditor, Bro. J. Osgood. The retiring president was presented with a past president's jewel. : A narrow escape from accident happened hero recently. A large block of concrete 101 l from the front of a twostory .building in one of the streets among throe ladies who happened to be passing at tho lime. Fortunately the lolling block missed them, though tho pieces struck them when the concrete smashed on the footpath. It was a most unpleasant experience. ' An enjoyable euchre partv, arranged by the ladies of the local Catholic Club was held at the Mounted Rifles' orderly-room last evening, there being a large attendance. Tho ladies' prizes were won by Misses Hurley and Butler, and the men's prizes by Messrs. OReilly and Valkor. The ladies provided supper, and a danco followed. A man named Cecil Rhodes met with a nasty accident last evening. Ho was cycling along Me.in Street West when, m attempting to turn a corner, the wind, which was blowing fiercely at tho time, carried him with such force against a building that he was .rendered unconscious, and had to be taken to the hospital. His Excellency the Governor has consented to open tho Manawatu A. and I. Association's Dairy Show in June next.

At tho monthly meeting of tho Alan.av.-atn Philosophical Society last evening (the president, Mr. W. ]?. Dunvard, presiding), a paper on "Some Acw Zealand Moths" was road bv the •m CV ', P 0 1 ' SLA - Tho reading was illustrated by specimens captured by the author of the paper. Two papers ny Air Richard Henry, curator ofKapiti Island, were read by the secretary of tho society (Mr. Kenneth Wilson). The papers dealt with "Pike as Health Offers of the Wi*or" and "Wapiti and Moose in New Zealand." Miss Ironside, M.A., of tho Palmerston High school, also read an interesting paper. J. ho contributors were accorded votes of thanks.

After the conclusion of business at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, the Mavor, Mr. J. A iNash, was entertained at simper by tho councillors. Councillor HaVdon presided, and in proposing tho health of tho guest ot tho evening referred to the very cordial relations which had existed between the Mayor and the council ever since his election to that oiliee three years ago, and he heartily congratulated him on his return for the tliird time in succession unopposed. The Mayor had carried out his multifarious duties in a manner that had secured for him the entire confidence of the community, lhe Mayoress also had done great .tork m the interests of the town and was entitled to their hearty thanks. The whole of tho councillors', the town clerk, and tho borough engineer testified to the splendid manner n which the Mayor had conducted " : th'o business of the borough. The Mayor, in returning thanks, said that' there was one fact of which he felt proud, and that was that during the. whole three years that he had presided at the council he had never once had to adjourn any meoting-they had always finished their business, and at a reasonable hour. Though councillors had on occasions differed with him and with brother councillors, they had never alowed their differences to interfere with the cordial relations which had always existed among them. The health of tho retiring councillors, Messrs. Hewitt Clausen, and Palmer, was also honoured.
