AUSTRALIA'S NAVAL SCHEME. the paramount necessity. (Rcc. April 20, 10 p.m.) London, April 20. In an interview with a representative of Reuter, Admiral Henderson said he was much impressed by the intense loyalty existing in Australia. Tho basis of the Australian naval scheme was the belief that an enemy threatening any part of the Umpire was Australia's enemy, and the immense and paramount necessity for tho Australian Navy supporting tho rest of tho Empire's naval forces. The defence of the Australian coasts and shipping was only a secondary object. 11l war time it would be essential to place the fleet under the Admiralty.
CANADA'S NAVAL POLICY. Sir Wilfrid Laurier recently took the unusual course of addressing to the publisher and editor of "La Press" the leading French newspaper of Montreal, a letter sotting forth his views on the naval policy of Canada. He said the duty of statesmen was to. provide against the possibility of catastrophe. He condemned as demagogues those who had attacked him in Quebec, and replied to the statements that the control of tho Canadian Navy would bo with the British Government, by declaring that Canada's autonomy liad been preserved by the clause in tho Naval Act which reserved to Parliament the absolute control of a service which was of its own creation, and which could be used otherwise than by the. will of the representatives of the people.
