WEST COAST PROSPECTS.
fßy TQlcsribh-Special Correspondents Christchurcli, April 18. Mr. T. E. Taylor, M.P., who has just returned from the. West Coast, is convinced that that district has a great future as a graring country. Ho believes that cattle-raisin; and dairying will have almost the same importance as they have in Taranaki, and that, increased prosperity will begin to make it>elf felt soou after WesUand and Canterbury have been connected by rail. "If somo of those who are searching for land throughout the length and breadth of the North Island," he says, "turned their attention to the possibilities of the West Coast, they would probably get a greater reward for theiv efforts than the North Island can offer. That may seem to be a very •enthusiastic expression of opinion, but I know a number of practical cattle men who will confirm it. I am convinced that Christchurcli as a business and manufacturing centre will receive a notable impetus when it gets control of the West Coast trade, on "tho completion of the railway." Mr. Taylor found a general impression that the tunnel would not be constructed in less than five years. Only about a nvilo anil a third had been constructed at Ilii! Otira end, and only a few chains at the Bealcy onil.
