* THE PARAIURAUMU FATALITY. CORONER'S INQUIRY. An inquiry was held yesterday by Dr. A. M'Anhur, S.M., Coroner, into the circumstances surrounding the death of Clarence Morrisb, who was drowned at 1 araparaumu on .Sunday, morning as a result of the capsizing 01 a small canvas boat, iu which ho and a friend were sailing. ■lames Henry Noel Hyde stated tbat he ami Morrisn put out lor a sail in the boat, but the boat capsized and they returned to the shore, and took the. centre board and other gear out, as they had decided to scull. Having no rowlocks they paddled, and, after going a short distance, Hyde used his hind as a rowlock, and advised Morrish to do likewise. Morrish attempted to change his position in order that he might use one of his hands as a rowlock, and, in doing so, he capsized the boat. Hyde, who could swim, struck out for the shore, and was assisted in by his father. When,he got ashore there was no sign of Morrish. Ho (Hyde) thought that Morrish could swim, but, when he came to the surface after the capsize, Morrish was calling out, and so Hyde gave him an oar on which to keep atloat. The body of the deceased was found by a friend, Gnarles E. Hansen. Evidence was also given by Mr. D. D. Hyde, who stated that he knew the boat in which the fatality occurred, arid had always considered her perfectly safe. > A° verdict of accidentally drowned was returned. PASSENGER DISAPPEARS. EVENT ON THE TAINUI. William Taylor, a third-class passenger from London to New Zealand, disappeared from the Tainui while the vessel was between Las Pahnas and Cape Town. It is surmised that ho wont overboard during the night, for he, was last seen on deck about 11 p.m., and was'missing at breakfast time next morning, but now the event happened nobody knows. Taylor appeared to be depressed from the time the Tainni left Home, and it is stated by his fellow-passengers that he left the Homeland hurriedly after a family quarrel. TRAMCAR ACCIDENT." ■ • There was ,a block of tram traffic inLambtoii Quay about 7 o'clock last night, the. cause being an accident to a passenger, Mrs. P. Morris, a Native woman. It appears that Mrs. Morris, who was on her way homo to Picton from a visit to Wellington, was travelling in a car bound for Willis Street, and, while the tram was going at a good pace near Messrs lurkcaldic and Stains's establishment, she, fell off, (hough how is not stated. 'When' picked up, Mrs. Morris was unconscious, and Dr. Henry was at once sent for. Hβ found her to be suffering from slight concussion of the brain and an injury to the left ear. She was subsequently removed to her lodgings in Molesworth Street. DEATH AT THE SAILORS' REST. Charles Henry Leathan, a married man,' who resided at 3 Peter Street, died suddenly at the Sailors' Rest yesterday afternoon. Deceased, who was a waterside worker, was in the Rest watching somo other men playing a game of dominos. At about a miarter to 3 o'clock he was observed to go towards the door, and, after vomiting, collapsed. Dr. Henry was summoned to the scene, but, by the time- ho arrived, the man was beyond medical aid. It is understood that deceased had suffered with heart trouble for some years, and that he had been an inmate of the hospital some little-time ago. The 'body was removed to tho morgue, where an inquest will probably be held to-day. MISHAPS AT WAIHI. MINER SERIOUSLY INJURED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Waihi, April 18. T. Franklin, a miner employed at'the Grand Junction mine, was seriously injured through the premature explosion of a charge of gelignite fracturing his left arm, and necessitating amputation. A miner named Faulkner, employed in the Waihi mine, had a narrow escape. After firing the fuse of a charged hole ■he was knocked down by a piece of quartz falling from the roof overhead.' However, he managed to crawl behind a pilo of dirt, thus'escaping the full effect of the flying stone which followed tho explosion.

A RACECOURSE ACCIDENT. Dunedin, April 18. At the Beaumont Kaccs yesterday a horse named Picnic Gun ran through the crowd while doing a preliminary for the llolynoaux Had; Handicap. He jumped or scrambled through a barb-wire fence, and was pulled up half a mile away. A man named John "MacFherson was knocked down, suffering from concussion o£ the brain, and possibly a fractured skull. He was still unconscious this'morning. JOCKEY -INJURED. Auckland, April 18. In the Maiden Hurdles at-the Auckland races to-day, Escalibur fell, and his rider, A. Gray, received serious injuries to his head. Ho was taken to the hospital in an unconscious condition.
