WELLINGTON COURSING MEETING.
HARES AND HOUNDS AT n _ . _■■■;-•:■ ■_ TBEOTHAM..^ The very wet weather on Saturday morning caused it to be doubtful for some time whether the Wellington Metropolitan Coursing Heeling would l)e opened or postponed. ■However, the enthusiasts entrained for Trentham, and made a start in the grey drizzle of a gloomy autumn day. The rain cleared after twelve, the course was not over-heavy, and the quiet drab afternoon was not at all unpleasant, lhe following are the results:— The Wellington Stakes, for which .£3O was offered in prizes, was laken first. In the first heat C. A. Schauer's Itufus Dawes defeated E. M'lntosh's Mon Ami by two points. The second heat was won by J. Brosnan's Kilfillon from J. Williamson's The Leader by three points. H. Smith's Miss Bodmin struck her colours to K. M'K'cnzio's Maximised in tho third heat, with a three-point beating, and, in the fifth heat. G. E. Hagan's Pawn Rose outpointed J. J. O'Donoghuo's Cznrine II by four. The fourth heat, which had been delayed, was between J. Wareham's Presontation and C. Reid's Temuka; The dogs were not slipped to the first let released for them, as one of the pair failed to sight it, It is much to the satisfaction of experienced coursing hands when the slipper shows considerable knowledge of his business, and greatly to the slipper's credit when he does the right thing notwithstanding the tantalising yells of "let 'em go" from the "experts." The dogs were slipped in tho wake of the second hare, and Presentation won fairly easily by two points. A very poor hare took the field for tho second heat, in which N. Lutz's Captain Starlight defeated J. Jonkinson's Bulwark's Maid by two points. A good course between A. J. Parson's Full of Mischief and C. A. Schauer's Headlight resulted in tho seventh course going to tho former by two. Headlight led and scored three before Full of Mischief eeored at all, but the latter, a good worker, equalled its opponent's tally and then killed. Heat number eight was to have been Tim between J. Wyeth's Lady Fortress and T. F. Thompson's Bowarrow, but as Lady Fortress did not compete, an occidental bye was run. J. Jenkinson's British Grenadier beat H. Langford's Sorrento in the ninth heat by two points, after ;1 finn course, in which the hare by a remarkable turn got a break of a chain, and reached home. The last event of the first round was a bye run for Valorous. Valorous showed great form. Rufus Dawes aud Kilfilleu opened.the second round- The former won by five. Maximised and Presentation then ran an I undecided heat, and Fawn Rose and Captain Starlight did likewise. Full of Mischief scored a (hreo-poiut win over Bowarrow after a tough chase of a hare, which eventually beat them both. Maximised and Presentation were then slipped together again, and Maximised got a sixpoint victory. F.iwn Rose and Cantain Starlight ran another undecided heat. Valorous was a warm favourite for its heat with British Grenadier, and won l)v three points. It was a tough run, and British Grenadier made a plucky fight of it For tho third time Fawn Rose and Captain Starlight were let go together. This lime Captain Starlight killed and won by two points. This was the last heat of the day. Tho meeting will bo continued to-day.
