PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Special Correspondent.! Palmerslon, April 12. Maunder's new cantata, "Olivet to Calvary," was rendered by St. Andrew's choir, assisted by other vocalists, at the Presbyterian Church last evening, when there was a very large attendance. The solo numbers were taken by Miss Paget, and Messrs. ,T. Rodgers, A. E. Bennett, and S. Wilson, and the whole was excellently produced. Mr. C. W. Naylor was .choirmaster and organist. A cricket match between the local lodge of Druids and the Phoenix Cricket Club is to bo played on the sports ground on Good Friday.

The Manawatu Caledonian Society lias arranged to hold a Scotch concert on the evening of .Easter < Monday,, and has secured the services of Madame Groome, Miss Neville, and Messrs. Farquhar Young and Harry Hall, all vocalists of repute.

• At the meeting of the Kairanga County Coimcil yesterday, Mr. I , '. Mueller (secretary of the Manawatu Gorge Copper Company, Wellington) wrote as follows:—"I have been instructed by the directors of this company to ask your council for permission to put in a small drive from the roadside for the purpose of testing and tracing a copper lode that is believed to exist in the gorge, .and over which area we hold mining rights. The site is three-quarters of a mile from the Woodville end, and is not liable to slips. The drive would start straight into the solid rock wall, and the mouth would be properly timbered. Wo anticipate that twelve or fourteen feet would be sufficient. We trust your council will grant us the permit, as it means a lot to us, and would, if we were successful, incan a boom for the district generally, as we would bo the means of circulating money and increasing values." It was decided to refer the matter to the Pakiatua County Council, as the drive would be in that countv.
