WHAT WE WANT.
MORE IMMIGRANTS. An active scheme of immigration for Nev Zealand was advised by Mr. 11. C. Tcwsley (president of the. Chamber of Commerce) at tho annual meeting of the chamber yesterday. ,"It is. to be regretted," he said, "that a more active scheme of immigration has not been adopted by the Govcrnnient, seeing that other countries are doing their best to encourage n good class of emigrants to their shores. In a recent number of the 'Western Times' of Perth, it is reported that so well pleased are the emigrants who are arriving there that they themselves are sending Home for their friends and relations at the rate of about 100 a. week. This is the stamp of sfciigrant that is wanted for New Zealand. "It is greatly to be regretted," he. cistinued, "that certain sections of the community are endeavouring to block the importation of added numbers to New Zealand, on the plea that by so doing labour will-be'cheapened, and the possibility arise of there being no work for ■th'teb wh6''jlrrive.t.ilfi thol.iproper class of erMgrsinfis itcured, , there -should bo no difficulty under th,is heading. It is a wellknown fact that in a considerable number of the manufacturing establishments throughout New Zealand a large amount of labour is required that cannot be got. The great need of the Dominion," ha asserted, "is emigrants who are fitted to go on the land. The crying need of this Dominion at the present' day is a safe but progressive immigration policy," (Applause.) .
