PALMERSTON NEWS.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston North, April 8. The animal meeting of the Palincrslon North branch of (lie Society for the' Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last night, tlie president, Mr. .1. H. Hankins, being in tlic chair. Five new members were' elected, hi the annual report the committee regretted that the operations of tho society had been much in. evidence during the year, but notwithstanding they had preferred to keep eases out of Court as much as possible, turning rather at prevention. The number of cases which appeared in Court Rave no idea of the general work of the society. The inspector, Mr. A. l'errin, had been especially energetic and painstaking. Tho report and balance-sheet, the lattpr showing u credit of Xii fis. Oil., were adopted. It was decided to raise the salary of the inspector from .£lO to X2O, in view of the uplendid work ho was doing. Tho following officers were elected:—Patron, His Excellency the Governor; president, Mr. J. 11. liankins (re-elected); vicepresidents, Messrs. W. Rnthcrfurd, J. P, Leary, and Dr. G. Wilson; treasurer, Mr. A. ,T. Graham; lion. vet. surgeon, XI r. .1. Cockcrott; committee, Messrs. C, N. Clausen, J. J. Whitehead, W. Rich, ardson, and .1. Louisson; lion, solicitors, Messrs. Hankins and Fitzherbcrt; lion, auditor, Mr. P. L. Sim. A report was received from Mr. Clausen in connection with foino trucks of pigs which ho had seen at the Palmcrston railway station yard on April 5. The society went into committee to deal with the matter.

All tho Palmerston churches aro proparing special music for (ho Easter holy days. Stainer's "Crucifixion," and Mnundcr's new cantata "Olivet to Cal-' vary" are amongst the works which will bo produced. At a meeting of tho committee of the Palmerston Tennis Club, a statement of accounts in connection with the tournament held a few weeks'ago, showed that, there would be a profit of over .£3O. Tho president, Mr. W. L. Fitzhcrbert, who presided at the meeting, said he anticipated that the year's transactions would result in tho bank overdraft being reduced by at least .£SO. It was decided to allow the use of the courts for a Maori tournament at Easter. Tho president was empowered to havo extensive improvements carried out during the \vinter. The Pahiatua Tennis Club telegraphed that it would be unable to come to Palmerston to-day, but would play the match early next season. Bio. J. S. Burrell, L.D., has been appointed to represent tho local Good Tomplar Lodge at the Grand Lodge Session at Dunedin at Easter, and Bros. Outrain and Skinner will represent it at the No-License convention hero at Easier. , l Mr. W. F. Durward presided at a meeting of the Men's Freo Social Club Committee last evening, when further arrangements were made in connection with the conversazione, which is to be held shortly io raise funds to further extend the usefulness of tho club. A. special meeting of members of the Palmcrston Bowling Club was held last night to rcceivo a statement of accounts from tho secretary, Mr. F. J. Tasker, who leaves in a few days on a trip to tho Old Country. Tho president, Mr. J. A. Nash, occupied the chair, aud said tho club's position was a most satisfactory one. The receipts for tho year amounted to .£398 Gs. 10(1., expenditure X 243 Is. 7d., leaving a credit balance of .£IG3 13s. 3d. The overdraft had l>een reduced by ,£152 11s. 9d.' The membership was now 150. This splendid position had 'been brought about by the energy of the secretary, Mr. Tasker. The fecretary was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and it was hoped that ho would take, up tho work again next year.

The"art union just hold by the Palmerslon Bowling Club resulted in a profit of .£3O.

At the monthly meeting of (he W.C.T.U., Mrs. H. jMowlem in the chair, an interesting report of the convention recently held at New Plymouth waa Riven by Mrs. G. Allman. Mcsdamcs W. Ritchie ~and.., Hills were appointed to represent tho union at the No-Licenaj Convention to bo held here on Easter Monday, Dr. Dunn, of Wanganni, is to be asked to .address a meolins? of women at Pnlincrstbn on April 18. -It was decided to hold tho meetings of tho union fortnightly in future, instead of monthly. Three new members joined tho union. Tho annual entertainment in connection with the Ashhurst School was held in the Town Hall last night, tho building being crowded,with an enthusiastic audience, and the tchool funds will benefit tn tho extent of between .£l3 and £U. Tho programmo wns contributed by the school children, who had been splendidly trained by the headmaster. Mr. A.- 0. Buckler, and the other teachers, assisted .by Mrs. Buckler, and they acquitted themselces in great style. Air. T. Hart, chairman of tho School Committee, presided, and at the conclusion of the entertainment, thanked all who had assisted to make the concert such a success.
