■LADY PASSENGER FALLS BETWEEN THE CAEEIAGES. (By Tclcgraph.-Press Association.) Faimerston April 9. A shocking fatality occurred on the railway north of Oraki on Saturday, tho victim being Miss Ellen. Louiso Gates, who was travelling by tho Main Trunk express. The body was brought to Pallimrrifon last night, by deceased's brother, a well-known local cycle and photograph agent.

Miss Oates, who was aged 2G, had been staying with another brother at Wellington. She was not in good health, and was on her way to her brother at PalniCTston with her mother- When the train was about two miles north of Otaki she went out on to tho carriage platform, and, it seems, fell between the two carriages. It was some time before tho guard could be informed, and by that time the train was far past the scene, but it was stopped at Manakau, whence some railway men wore sent back with a trolly. They found the body terribly mnngkd, and took it back to Otuki. Death must have been instantaneous.

An inquest will lie opened to-morrow morning to take Mrs. Oafos's evidence, and to permit of the body boiner taken to Christchurcli, where deceased's homo was, for interment.

Constable Satherley, of Otaki, reported by telephone to the Wellington Police, on Saturday evening, that William Gates, brother of the deceased, had arrived at Otaki by the 8 p.m. train from Palmerston North that day, and wa= leaving by n goods train at 10 p.m., and was taking the body bad; with him.
