COALING AT HOBART. The Hobart "Mercury" says that- when steamers of <OCO to 6000 tons were in the Loiulon-Hobart-Ncw Zealand trade, they usually coaled at Hobart, and it often happened that steamers that were not scheduled to call there used to put into the Derwent for coal to enable thein to complete their voyage from London to the Dominion. With the increase in the sir.e of the steamers to 10,000 and 12.CC0 tons, this trade fell away, as the vessels were able to carry sufficient coal to take them right through to New Zealand. Of late, however, some of the larger steamers have found it convenient to coal in Tasmania, and in addition occasional steamers bound from Liverpool to New Zealand have put into the Derwent for coal in preference to any of the Australian ports. Amongst thoso vessels may bo mentioned the Empire Transport last year, the Durham in January last, and today (March 27) the steamer Norfolk, bound from Liverpool to New Zealand, is due at Hobart for 400 tons of coal. 11l addition to these, the I'. and O. mail steamers which call- here in the fruit .season have periodically taken in coal at' Hobart. Tlic lt.M H. Macedonia, for instance, last month took in 100 tons and' that It.M.S. Moldavia recently took ICO tons. Tlic i-nter-Stato steamers coal every irip, and then, when the warships come to Hobart for annual battle practice, coal is brought up from New Zealand for them. At odd intervals f-tcamers bound from New York to New Zealand have put into the Derwent for ,coal.

The Union Company's, ferry steamer "Jaori accomplished a fine fctcamincc performance on her run down from Wellington on Wednesday evening. The "teamcr left the Wellington whai-r shortly afier 8 p.m., but after ronndlnc Somes I«lniid she encountered a thick fog, which prevented much headway being made. Wellington Heads wore cleared at twenty minutes to 10, but the prevalence of foj in the, strait retarded her pace until half-past 1 ill tne morning, when the order for "full weed was rung. Although many mile.! behind her usual running (says the ".Star"), the "greyhound" kept un a tine pace, and reached the moles at I.yttcltou at 7 o'clock on Thursday morninir, being only half an hour behind her time-tiib'.e and allowing tho southern passengers to connect with the first express.
