THE QUEBEC BRIDGE.
CANADIAN TENDER ACCEPTED. (By-Telegraph-Press Association Copyright! Ottawa, April 6. The St. Lawrenco Bridge Company, an entirely Canadian concern, has secured tho contract for re-building : the Quebec Bridge, the largest bridge-en-gineering project in the world.
The length' of this bridge as originally designed was to be 3210 ft., and the width 80ft., there being provision for two railway tracks, two tramways, two roadways, and two sidewalks. The chief feature was tho great central span of 1800 ft. On August 29, 1007, part of tho stmctur on the southern side .where tho work .had mainly proceeded, suddenly collapsed, carrying a number of men with it. At tho annual meeting of the Quebec Bridge Co., at Ottawa, on September ■1, 1908, it was announced that the bridge would bo completed by the Dominion Government. On August 12 on Order-in-Council was passed for tho construction of tho bridge. In September, 1909, it was announced that tho Dominion Government had decided to advise the Board of Engineers to call for tenders for the new bridge on both tho suspension and tho cantilever types. Tho style of the construction will depend upon tho cost and speed of erection, and also on general usefulness in comparison with the amount, of expenditure. The bridge is to be 150 ft. above high water, and if the cantilever be chosen it will bo of tho straight cantilever type. The snau has been reduced from ISOOft. to 1715 ft.
