NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By Glencoe.] Nominations for all events at tho Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting close at 9 o'cloGk.pi], Monday night with th'o' 'dub's secretary, Sir. A. E. Whyte. ' -' ■ Acceptances and ger.eral entries for all ovents at tho Patea Racing Club's meeting: close with thp secretary at Patea on Monday next-i at 8 p.m. Golden Loop has been struck out of all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting. A. recent addition to J. W. Lowe's team is a filly by King's Guest from Heavenly Twin. She is a half-sister to Theodore, and is owned by P. Neaglo. Mr. C. J. King, owner of Moreykofi, left for Sydney by last-night's steamer. Ho will spend about. a month on tho other side. ■ Tho Grand National winner, Paisano, has arrived at Ellerslie to. fulfil his engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting. Word received in Auckland states that Don Hannibal's scratching for engagements at Randwick was not due to a further breakdown. Tho son of Explosion is training on satisfactorily. When Wirilla was just beaten in tho Camellia Stakes at llosehill on March 25 he carried 9st. 51b., and started on the outside of a field of eleven. As he lias 161b. less to carry in the Doncaster Handicap, he will likely start favourite. His owner is Mr. W. Fletcher, who won the last Epsom and Metropolitan double with Silver Hamilton and Eric. W. H. M'Lachlan, premier Australian jockey, was offered several mounts in tho Sydney Cup, but decided to wear Mr. E. J.-Watt's colours on Bridge, who will probably, start favourite. In the Doncaster Handicap M'Lachlan will rido Nuwara Eliya. Writing of the ex-North Island horse Swimming Belt, "Sir Modred" has the following to say in last Thursday's issue of tho "Southland Times":—The vagaries of Swimming Belt were of an unusual character. In tho Southland Cup race he ran prominently until five furlongs from home, when he evidently decided that he had had enough. Ho stopped galloping and turned his attention to his nearest attendant, Linda, whom ho tried to savage, but was held off by jockey L. Lloyd. On returning to the saddling paddock and being led to his stall, he turned on his youthful guardian and literally tore his clothes off him, also injuring tho hoy with his teeth/ Tho misbehaviour of the soil of Captain Webb did not stop here, as, on being lined up at the post for the last race, with his trainer (H. Carr) in tho saddle, he speedily showed temper. Carr dealt firmly with his mount, but the stallion was now thoroughly roused, and, going down- on his knees, he grabbed his neighbour, Somaroff, below the hock and drew that inoffensive animal's hind legs from under him. The rider of the assaulted horse'was almost dislodged, but recovered his seat when Somaroff again scrambled to his feet. Swimming Belt was placed by himself behind tho field, and subsequently ran well for a furlong or two, but then faded out of the struggle and finished down the course. Blood was flowing from his mouth or, returning to tho birdcade after the race. Owners and trainers aro reminded that acceptances for all handicaps and entries for the Maiden Scurry for tho Easter meeting of tho Feilding Jockey Club close 011 Monday, April 10, at 8.30 p.m. Meroze was priced during the Awapuni meeting, and Mr. W. Best asked ■100 guineas for the black marc. This sum, it is understood, would have been given, but the would-bo buyers were apparently not satisfied as to the soundness of the mare. In her winning effort 011 Thursday she got to tho end of a mile in lmin. <12scc., which was tho fastest gallop of the meeting. Though accepted for on both days at Awapuni, Equitas was not started at that, meeting. It is said that her owner was waiting for rain to soften the tracks. This may or may not be the case, but it is a noticeable fact that she has accepted in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. If she goes north, CI. Jenkins will also make the trip, and will ride her.
As was predicted .in this column on Thursday. Boanerges has been sent to Auckland to contest the big mile haudi-
cap. The son of Pilgrim's Progress was taken north by train yesterday. Today trainer George Price will board the Main Trunk express, and will superintend tlio final gallons at Ellerslie. Those who saw the brown colt run in the Manawatu Stakes predict that ho will put up .1 great l'aco on Saturday next. A. Oliver, who is to go to Auckland to ride Boanerges in the Easter Handicap, will also have the mounts 011 Orton in the Champagne Stakes and 011 Directoire in tlio Great Northern Oaks. As R. J. Mason will be detained at Riccarton with Peirene, Mazurka, Danube, and Vice-Admiral, his son Percy will look to tlio wants of, Orton and Directoire at Ellerslie. Most people arc surprised at the latter being sent away from horn*?, as her past form lias been of the poorest description, but probably she is only being sent up as a travelling companion to Orton. J. M'. Lowo returned from Awapuni yesterday, and reached Trentham with Effort lato in tlio evening. On Tuesday next he goos south with Gold Lace and Iranui. Jockey W. Rvan will follow 011 Saturday night. Tlio Martian—Two Step filly Mazurka was making her first public appearanco when sho contested the Sires' Produce .Stakes at Awapuni 011 Thursday. She showed lots of pace, but did not See out tjie journey, which was hardly to bo-ex-pected. It is quite on the cards that a big improvement may bo expected when next slie sports silk, which will, be in .the Challenge Stakes at Riccarton. Masterpiece, Counterfeit, and Big Blast (in charge of H. Cutts), Culprit, Aphaea, and Sunburnt (J. Franks), and Peireno and Mazurka (R. J. Mason) were shipped south by the Maori last evening. Jockey H. Gray is going south . 011 Monday night, and will ride work for R. J. Mason during the next week. Big Blast was priced during the ■Manawatu meeting. Her owner asked 300 guinea's for her, but no deal resulted. H. Donovan's appeal against his three months' disqualification imposed by the North Canterbury Club was heard by tlio metropolitan body on Tuesday last, when it was decided to refer the caso back to the Rangiora committee on the ground that Donovan was not present to hear the evidence against him. The secretary of the Wellington Racing Club advises that tlio name of St. Bees (St. Ambrose —Marlin) was omitted from tiio list of horses remaining in the New Zealand St. Loger Stakes. Sir Geo. Clifford was recently offered £150 for Big Blast, but stated that it would take something more than that to buy tlio horse. At' tlio Ascot (Sydney) Pony Meeting, last Wednesday week, Merrie Oliver and Maid of All Work were both among tho winners. Mr. W. Scott, who returned from Sydney. last Wednesday, is more impressed than ever with the racing business on the, other side of the water, and, ) ftor Easter, he will probably visit Sydney to do business at all tlio big Randwick' fixtures. Gipsy Belle is ono of the notable defections from the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. '
