NEW BISHOP OF SOUTHWARK
A TRANSFER FEOM JARROW. Dr. George Nickson, who for lour years as Suffragan Bishop of Jarrow has been a coadjutor of the Uishop of Durham, has been appointed to. succeed Dr. Talbot as Anglican Bishop of Southwark. Dr. Kickson is a few months short of forty-seven, and a man of vigorous personality. He was born at Birkdalc, Southport, in 1564, and took a First Class in the Theological Tripos at Cambridge in ISS7. He was shortly afterwards ordained, and bv the invitation of Principal Handley Moule (now Bishop of Durham) held for nine years tht post of tutor and bursar of liidley Hall, tho Evangelical theological college at. Cambridge. In 1895, while lie was still at Ridley, he was appointed Lecturer in Divinity at. Selwyn College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge lie did parish work both as a curate and as a rector, hi 1897 ho was appointed vicar of F.iirfield, Liverpool, and eight years later he received the living of St. Andrew's, Southport. He became associated again with Dr. Motile as examining chaplain in 1901, and subsequently as assistant bishop. Ho lias been as active in ministering among the Durham miners as in takint; part in University affairs. . His ■record is that of a broad-minded Evangelical. A suggestive indication of Dr. Nickson's personality is furnished by his confession in "Who's Who," that fishing and photography are his recreations, to which this year for the first time he adds model-engineering.
