NEW TREATY WITH BRITAIN.

The Anglo-Japanoso Treaty o£ Commerce, which was eißiiod yesterday, will generally reduce the duties of the Japanese statutory tariff by one-third in the important classes of textiles, and iron and steel goods. Some of the reductions under tho treaty compare as under with the statutory rates :— Eeduc- Statution tory to Britain, duty, s. d. p. (1. Cotton tissues, per 1b..., 0 9J 12 Fine woollens, per 1b.... 0 10i 11 Pig-iron, per lon 2 io" 3 5 Tin-plates, per ton 2i 2 31 l Corrugated iron, per ton dl 6 60 2 Tho Treaty stipulates that British goods shall not be more heavily taxed than those of other nations. It enumerates Japanese exports to the value of .£2,150,000 a year, which are to continue to be admitted free during (he twelve years in which the Treaty will bo in force. Six months' notice enables Great Britain to abrogate the clause. 'The Times" comments on the Government's candour and fair play, though its successors will thus be hampered if they desire to place a duty on imports.

ANGLO-JAPANESE ALLIANCE. A HAPPY SUPPLEMENT (Reo April G, 10.50 p.m.) Tokio, April G. Count Roimvra, Japanese Foreign Minister, at a banquet celebrating the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, said tho Alliance had well fulfilled its purpose, and was capable of yet greater good in its own sphere. Tho new Commercial Treaty happily supplemented it.
