PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON. London, February 23. Mr. W. B. Ainger, of Christchurch, not long ago passed the examination for the F.H.C'.S. of England, since when has settled in partnership in Sloaue Street, Loudon.

The Kcv. Harold S. Perkins, Congregational minister nl Curio Castle, has accepted the pastorate at Kawhia, and sailed for the Dominion last week.

Mr. Oswald Birley. the New Zealand artist, has two excellent pencil studies, "H. P. Birley," and "Lord Rodney," at the Modern Society of Portrait Painters' Exhibition, which' opened last week in London.

Lieutenants Grant, White, and Barton, of Auckland, and Robertson, of Dunedin, who underwent a course of instruction at the Hythe School of; Musketry, and wore, subsequently attached to regular regiments, are returning to New Zealand next month.

Mr. W. S. Ponsonby, son of Mr. ,T. C. Ponsonby, late of Dunedin, has been appointed assistant engineer to his Highness the Nizam of Hyderabad's State-guaran-teed railway, and'leaves London for India this week by the Himalaya to take up his new work. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Ponsonby and their two daughters have decided to reside permanently in England, and are at present living at Campden Hill, W.

Canon Ivens, of the Anglican Mission of Help to New Zealand, lectured on "New Zealand" a few nights ago in his parish of Sowerby Bridge, Yorks, and illustrated his lecture with slides lent him by the minister for Agriculture to the New Zealand Government.

Mr. Anthony Wilding was at San Remo last week competing in the international lawn tennis tournament there. The New Zealaiuler had little difficulty in beating the American player, A. Holmes, in tho second round of the gentlemen's singles championship of San Eemo, one game being the extent of the latter's success. As Holmes was the holder of the championship of San Remo, Wildings victory over him is the more notable.

Professor Bickerton, of Christch.ureh, was engaged last week in expounding his theory of the birth of worlds and systems to the younger generation of scientists— tho undergraduates. He lectured on Tuesday week in the Physics Theatre of London University to the Chemical, Physical, and Mathematical Societies of the college. The theatre was well filled, and the students listened with closest attention to the professor's demonstration of his theory of the Third Body. His breezy unconventionality, and his homely illustrations of knotty points, delighted the undergraduates, who rewarded his sallies with applause. Mr. N. Hill, senior inspector of schools I in Hawke's Bay, has returned to I/>ndon from a fortnight's visit to the scenes of his youth in the West Country. After forty years' absence, he went to Cheltenham, his old college, and gave two lectures there, one to the students, and one to tho public. Mr. Hill's chief interest whilo visiting this side of the world has been to study the educational institutions, and all over England and Scotland ho has visited schools, training colleges, and universities. He and his wife and daughter leave England on March C, and travel across Europe to Naples, afterwards visiting Egypt. They expect to reach New Zealand about tho middle of May. Scholefteld read a paper on "The Origins of the New Zealand Nation," at a meeting of tho Royal Colonial Institute, at the Whitehall Rooms, on .Tuesday night. At the annual meeting of tho New Zealand Association, which was held on Wednesday week at the Westminster Palace Hotel, it was decided to hold u special reception next -May to welcome the many New Zealand visitors expected in London for the 'Coronation. Steady progress during the year was shown in the annual report of the association, and the bal-ance-sheet revealed a credit balance of .£•18. Mr. H. H. Bridge, who presided, congratulated tho society on its satisfactory position. On Hie motion of I)r. T. W." Parkinson, it was decided to make a contribution of two guineas towards Lord Brassey's fund for erecting in London a memorial to Captain Cook. It was also decided that the captains of voxels in the passenger service between England and New Zealand should be elected honorary members of the association. Mr. A. J. Foivlor suggested that during the summer, when numbers of New Zealandcrs would be in London some function be held. Dr. Parkinson suggested that the High Commissioner and Lady HallJones should be a4:cd to welu-me the visitors on behalf of the association. It was resolved that a reception be held towards the end of May, at a ditlc convenient to Sir Joseph "Ward.
