PERILS OF THE ROAD.
AN EXTRAORDINARY STORY. (By TdeEraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, April S. The particulars of tho alleged extraordinary behaviour of a motorist while driving from Awakino to Te. Kuiti the. other day liavo como to hand. A settlor states that a man, accompanied by a lndy, was proceeding iir tho direction'of To Kuiti one day last • week, and was driving at a furious pace, and frightening everybody, on the road. Before his arrival at Mnhoomii he had had thrco encounters, the first being a collision with Mr. Jacobs. Tho motorist next cama up behind a sol tier riding in tho direction of tho township. The horse took fright, and the driver had a narrow escape from being thrown over n steep cliff. The driver, after leaving Mahoe-' nui, according to (he story told, ran intc a horse and gig driven by Mrs. ,T. Old, who was accompanied by Mrs. Castles. Both occupants were thrown out, and were badly hurt, the gig being smashed to pieces. -Mrs. Old was removed in a critical condition to a private hospital in Te Kuiti. Mrs. Castles has recovered from her injuries sufficiently to be about again. Tho motorist, it is stated, proceeded a further eight miles, and ran •into the leaders of tho mail coach team, with tho result that the polo of tho coach was broken. Tho driver had to return seven or eight miles to Piopio to procure another vehicle to continue his journey. It is alleged that the lady and' the driver of the motor seemed to enjoy the wliolo proceedings, and never once took tho trouble to ascertain the extent of damage or injuries or to apologise. It is stated that the occupants of the car have been identified, and that a Court' case is likely to follow..
