In ninny places the, position was becoming serious, and even now the rain has come too lato to save root crops. lo the scarcity of feed, the cattle m some of the dairying districts nve in poor condition, and in consequence many of the factories will have to close 'down earlier than usual. However, good autumn growth ia now assured, nml if the early frosts do not damage the young grass there should he n plentiful supply of winter feed, lu Te Kuiti people who have been depending on tan!;? for their water supply will bo much relieved bv the rain tor many of them have had lo cart their household supply tor some weeks past.

The average lor (lie month of March lor a period, of :I7 years is 2.78 inches. Tho heaviest fall ever recorded for a March month was in IMS, when 8.12 inches fell alter a long spell of dry weather.
