THE SECRECY PLEDGE.
9 ATTITUDE OF A AIALGAMATED SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS. At its meeting on Tuesday evening, the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, which recently severed its connection with the Wellington Trades and Labour Council, was waited on by Mr. W. T. Young (president of the council), Air. D. M'Larcn, M.P., and Mr. Rylands, who appeared as a deputation to ask tho society to reconsider its decision. It will beYremembered that the Engineers' Society resolved to secedo rather than permit its delegates to sign the pledge drawn up by the officials of tho Trades Council, imposing on them absolute secrecy as to tho business transacted by the council in session. Rather than subscribe to such a procedure, the society decided to sever its connection with the council, and gave an intimation to that effect. The-mem-bers of tho deputation received a patient hearing, and it was decided that the question of reconsideration of the action taken'should be discussed at the next meeting of the society. The Amalgamated Society, of Engineers is oiie of the most powerful and wealthiest trade unions in the world. At present thero is a movement on foot to amalgamate with the Institute of Marine Engineers, but no 'definite stage has been arrived at yet in the preliminary negotiations.
