NATIVES RISING.
REVOLT IN NEW HEBRIDES. It is feared that several tribes on Santo Island, in tho New Hebrides group, have risen against the white settlers" This rumour was brought lo Sydney 011 Wednesday'last by the F.M.S. Paeiiique from Noumea. Just before that vessel left NonCaledonia tile St. Michel, a schooner which trades in the New Hebrides group, arrived at Noumea from Port Vila with the report that the white settlers at Santo had.j'jnt an urgent call for help to tho niitjj'grities, slating that their . lives aiid goods were menaced. Tho .British and,- French Residents promptly ordered a' force of police oh board the vessel Island's Belle; with instructions to go to Santo. Unfortunately, the progress of the vessel was hindered by bad weather, and, 119 news as to the result of her mission Had readied Fort Vila when the St. Michel left. The French warship Kersaint was to havo left Noumea 011 March- 7 for the New Hebrides, but had to postpone her departure owing to an epidemic of la grippe'breaking out amongst tho crow. The Governor of New Caledonia ordered lier to leave 011 March 11 for Port Vila, where the commandant will arrange with the Hesidents as to what measures will be taken in quelling the outbreak.
