JOHNSON AS MOTOR-SCORCHER

WILL APPEAL AGAINST CONVICTION. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright san Francisco, March 27. The heavy-weight boxing champion, Jack Johnson, will appeal against his conviction and sentence to a term of imprisonment for exceeding the automobile speed limit. Johnson returned to San Francisco in tho middle of last month in order to take a rest after eight mouths of theatrical work on tho vaudeville stage, following his victory over Jeffries at Reno. He brought with him three motor-cars, and declared that motor-racing was interesting him more than tho _ prospect of a fight with any new "white hope." A writer in tha "San Francisco Chroniclo" says: "If there is a chance, Johnson will welcome tho opportunity to race Barney Oldnold or any other crack who shows up, for any amount up to 2500 dollars. If thera isn't any wager in sight, Johnson expects to have as much fun in speeding up by his lonely. "Johnson looks bigger even than when he came to California almost a year ago to go into' training for Jeffries. He claims, however, that he is at 213 pounds, his normal weight. Certainly ho looks in healthy condition, which rather upsets tho story that came out several months ago of a nervous breakdown. "The Chicagoan isn't addicted to talking lights these days. Ho says what everybody knows, that there is no ono in sight "to give him a match, and consequently no big purses being offered. Ho says ho is willing enough to meet any heavy-weight in the world for six rounds, twenty, or any distance, but that ho must be shown a sufficient inducement. " 'I don't see any promoter offering 'any purse for a match,' ho complained. 'I i.iw Rickard in Chicago, but there was nothing doing with him. .1 talked with M'lntosli, but he didn't mention any sum that ho was willing to give. I told him he ought to mako me an offer, 'and finally said that ho ought to give _me as miicli as ho gave Tommy Burns in Australia. I am- willing toi meet any ono for 30,000 dollars, but I would bo foolish to take a small sum when I can make from 1000 dollars ,to ,1500 dollars a week on the road in' theatrical'work.'"
