NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Glencoe.] The New Zealand horse, The Cockatoo, which If. Hickey sold for 500 guineas to go to India, won a race quite recently at Calcutta for the Hon. A. A. Apcar. Celerity, the winner of the Oakleigh Plate last year, was submitted to auction by Messrs. W. C. Yuille and Co. in Melborne recently, but' was passed in at 260 guineas. She is to be retired to the stud. The Morrlialloc trainer, K. A. Connolly, who purchased Cliauvelin from Messrs. Whitworth, failed to win a race with the Soult gelding, and recently sold him for 310 guineas. ~ Cliauvelin was one of tho.se unlucky horses who continually run well enough to encourage their owners to back them, yet never win. Thoro is soiuo mention of the liutt trainer, F. Higsott, removing his team to Awapuni. Daisy Paul, who, it will be remembered, was made the subject of a heavy plunge on both days at Dannevirke, is i:i the Taikorea Y/eltcr event at Awapuni next week, and has only 51b. above the minimum to carry. Previous successes of this mnro include a Connolly Handicap and a Longhurn Handicap. JJoanerges is looking and going well at Awapuni, and seems to bo on the eve of showing his best form. This time last year ho was at the top of (he handicaps, and carrying all before him. He also defeated a good field oE two-year-olds in the lliuvke's Bay Stakes. Gladiolc is going along nicely in her track work at Awapuni, and her owner is sanguine that the little filly will run well forward at the Manawatu meeting. With Ost. lib. on her back, the daughter of Epilogue has only 101b. more to carry than when she spread-eagled a good field in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui. Polymorphous is still running out in the paddock, and so far has not been operated upon; H. W. Clay, who formerly prepared his horses at Maryborough, is now settled.

at Trentham, and will in future act as a public mentor there. 1* speaks volumes for the W.li.C. tracks that many outsiders are coming to Trentham. Sen Queen, who is now trained at the Hutt, is still very flighty, and it is probable that her owner will issue instructions to have her schooled over fences with a view to quietening her down. has been treated to a do.-o of physic since racing at Napier, and at the present lime lie is on the easy list, lie is not engaged a! tho Awapuni fixture, but will be scon out at some of the Easter meetings. A final reminder is given to owners that acceptances for the first day's events at the Manawatu Racing Club's meeting clo'.e to-night. . Artillerie has declined her engagements in both tho Doncasler Handicap and the Sydney Cup. It is stated that G. Absolum may shortly journey to Australia with Santa Rosa, Carl Rosa, and Waimangu. Two boxes have been engaged for (he autumn meeting at Ellerslie for R. .T. Mason. Master Soult. who has been off the scene for some considerable time, is now being ridden about at Ellerslie, and may shortly be placed in work again. AVhen Soultline (Dst. 12ib.) won the Mansfield Plate, six furlongs, from Tangaroa, Ost. 71b., Punt, 9st., and Lamination, Ost. 41b., at Bombay, on February IS, ho started equal favourite with Elimination. The distance wai run in lmin 13 3-ssee. Among recent winners in Sydney was the New Zealand-bred Chamade (Uhlan —Hcriot). Tho A'.R.C. committee on March 17 concluded an inquiry into the running of Royal Fleet, who was beaten in one of tho hurdle raccs at the recent meeting. The committeo found the explanation of the mare's owner, E. A. Connolly, satisfactory, and .held that no suspicion attached to tho rider, J. N. M'Gregor. Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for all events for the Easter meeting of the Fcilding Jockey Club, excepting tho Maiden Scurry, close on Friday, March 31, at 5.30 p.m.
