FEATHERSTON NEWS.

Whilst digging in the bank of tho Tauherinikau Itiver on Saturday, an employee of the Donald.Estate'unearthed a human skull and bones, supposed to bo those of a Maori. The remains had been buried only a few inches below tho surface of the.ground. The annual picnic of tho Kaiwaiwni School was held-on Friday last in tho grounds of Mr.. Gordon . Eliott ("Tho Knell"), which are very suitable for such outings. '~Xho'„parents refreshments, and 'an'enjoyable, day was spent alike by tho prown-up folks and the children. Mr. E. A. King, the teacher, and Mr. Eliott, Dne of the committee, kept the field sports going, and the programme in,this respect was q; varied one. The remainder of the committee also worked'with. a will to make the day a pleasant one. Mrs. .Eliott gave a bran tub for the small children, which was very much appreciated, and' Miss Healy, who had" chargo' of tho infants, was untiring in her efforts. Funds for the sports were' collected by. the committee on the ground, and the amount (,£3) was all distributed. Tho outing terminated about '1.30 p.m., and, before its conclusion, hearty cheers were given for the ladies. _ At the local bowling green on Saturday, Elliott's team won the final in a tronliy competition, tho scores being as under: Horsbrugh, Nix, Yule, Elliott (s.), 23, v, Stowoll, Galbraith, Tocker, Bungay (s.), 18. ICnowles, Holms, Benton (s.), 27, v. Cundy, Henderson, Evcrton (s.), 20. Mushrooms which are usually very plentiful at this timo of the year around Feathorston, have been very scarce up till ""oil Saturday Featherston Riflo Club commenced a series of competitions for a trophy presented by Mr..
