NEW ZEALAND'S PRISON SYSTEMMr. M'Farlane, Comptroller-General of Prisons in New South Wales, and Mr. Haj : , Director of Forests, who have been making .investigations into, tho prison system inftow Zealand, tho prison camps, and our afforestation system, went soutli by the Maori to Lyttelton last evening, tinder tho direction of Dr. F. Hay (In-spector-General of Mental Hospitals) and 1 Mr. F. G. Waldograve' (Commissioner of Police) they have been visiting the various centres in the North Island. Dr. Hay and Mr. Waldegravo were unable to go south and the llev. J. A. Y. Ivayll, Visiting Adviser of Prisons, accompanied thim. Speaking to a Dominion reporter, both Mr. Ilay and Mr. M'Farlane expressed, appreciation of the courtesy and assistance they had received to enable their mission to bo as successful as possible. Mr. M'Farlane said ho ' was extremely interested in the new introductions into our prisons system and lie was giving them a very close investigation. He was now going to Lyttelton, Hanmor Plains, Invcreargill, ana back again to New Plymouth to study what was being done at the gaols at tli6so places. At New Plymouth lie would go into the treatment of. habitual criminals. Mr. Hay is going to the Prison Camp at tho nanmer Plains and afterwards lie will return to Rotorua: He also intends to visit the kauri forests and sec how the timber industry is carried on there. The visitors were reticcnt as to the nature of tho report they would submit to their Government 011 what they had seen.
