PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph.—Special CorresDondent.) Palmerston North, March 27. ■ ~ conference of delegates from local bodies interested in tho. maintenance of the Munawatu Gorge Road was held here to-day. Mr. Moody, chairman of the kairanga County .Council, presided. Others present were: The Mayor of Palmerston (Mr. J. A. Nash), Messrs. D. Buick, M.P., Field, M.P., Ross, M.P., Guthrie, M.P., Goodbehere, J. W. Bramwell, Moodie, L. li.-Bryan, Wilsher, Voss, Mayo, .Bolton, and D. Hughes. It was decided to petition the Government to tako over the maintenance of the road, as it was held that the thoroughfare was a main arterial connecting' link. A deputation from the Citiezns' League, headed by the president (Mr. R. S. Abraham), waited on the Mayor to-day to request ..that the matter of! leasing thfe ■borough'' land in Coleman Place sliould be held! over till the new council had .been elected, i.s it was considered that this! limit should-.be, kept as a site for .a 'new lih'iftry. The Mayor said that the ratepayers, at a poll on the' question,. lfad already decided against this'.site, liut ;bo suggested that a 'deputation from the ;league might wait on the council. This course 'will probably be adopted. Reference was; also made to the reserves which are being cut -up, and other matters. At the' Police Court to-day, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., a man named John Byrne was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for consorting with a woman of bad character- He was also fined IDs., or fourteen days' imprisonment, for obstructing tho police when attempting to arrest a woman on a charge of vagrancy. The licensee of the Family Hotel was lined X 6 and costs for -allowing : drunkenness on his premises. The magistrate stated that he would not order an endorsement of the license, as the licensee had been absent at the time of the occurrence, and the police reported that his house was well conducted.- 1, Catherine" Wiltshire pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Midwives Act in using the title of. midwife while unlicensed, and practising as a midwife while unregistered. She was fined fJOs. and costs in the first case, and i£s and costs 011 the second charge. A number of breaches of by-laws were dealt with. A cottage belonging to Mr. G. Paget, at Fitzherbert East, was destroyed' by fire this afternoon. Mr. Paget was absent at the time of the fire. THE WOMAN OF TO-DAY.
