ABOUT £16,000 WORTH OF STOCK.

SAILS FOR AUSTRALIA TO-DAY, Four hundred and fifty-eight is tho total, as given officially, of tho stock heing sent to Australia by tho Whangapo to-day. Some particulars were given in yesterday's Dominion about tho shipment, but some of tho figures wero necessarily approximate. The exact numbers •are as lollow:— Horses.—Messrs. D. Hault and Sons, '-I'cilding, 151; -Messrs. i'hillis Brothers, Australia, 160; Air. Currie,- Kai I'.vi, i; ■Jlr. J. C'asserley, Hawera, Hr. Anderson, Pahiatua, 7; Jlr. J. D. Mitchell, iUanaia, 12; per Tarawera from south this morning (for .transhipment); 30; from XytWtoii tnis morning, 14; by papier train last evening, from .Messrs. Ward and M'Gaffin, 50. -Mr. Currie's horses are thoroughbreds. Cattle.—Messrs. Dalgety' and Co. (for Jlr. F. Fairey, of Nelson), 3; from Lyt■telton this morning, 2. .Some of tlie landing preparations were done yesterday, and stock is to bo all aboard to-day. Tho Whangape sails some time to-day direct for Sydney. . An estimate of the value of the cargo of animals is a difficult thing, but reckoning them at .£2O a head, which should : not be by any moans an over-estimate, there is nearly .£10.,100 worth. Tho Fairfax correspondent of the "Southland Times" ' writes: "The Com,'monwealth horse buyers are scouting the district for finality. Jlr. R. Cupples has .'parted to an Adelaide buyer with his three-year-old colt, Head Shepherd, by 1 Shepherd Lad. This colt has a blending of b'.ood that imported horses cannot excel—the AVait-a-Wce and Shepherd Lad. This blend for workers and quality could at all times command the judgejs eye in tlio show-ring, and the buyer's eye when offered for sale. But if farmers allow such quality to leave tho Dominion they will theii'be left with tho unsaleable |half-draughts that are being imported. Of course time and the buyers will bo ithe judges, but farmers should retain sufficient of the old quality to perpetuate the fame of Soatliluul as the Clydesdale 'district, of tho Dominion. There are many ■gone that Southland is well rid of, but the buyer of .this colt has not tho faintest •idea of the excellent blend of blood he has in his purchase, and 400 guineas was a small price to pay for a colt of his age : and breeding. However, South Australia will bo the gainer and Southland tho loser "
