THE ANTARCTIC.
CAPTAIN SCOTT'S EXPEDITION. By Telegraph-Press Agsociation-Copyrieht (Rec. March 26, 5.5 p.m.) London, March 25. Mis. Scott, wife of Captain Scott, who is in charge of the expedition at present in the Antarctic regions, has made an appeal for iCOOO to complete the sum of -,i!SJ),Oj)O M anil so relieve the Antarctic expetlition. of financial anxiety. DISPLAY OF APPARATUS. London, March 24. 'Arrangements are being made for the display at the Festival 'of Empiro of tho apparatus to bo used by Dr. Mawson's Antarctic expedition. THE TERRA NOVA. The Terra Nova was expected t° rfr appear in New Zealand waters about tl« middle of the present month (says the ''Lyttolton Times") and the absence ol any news of the vessel is a little surprising. Antarctic explorers have learned that it is not wise to attempt tho navigation of the Boss Sea after the end _ol February, when the Polar winter is Riving indications of its approach. In 190S the Ninirod, after landing Sir Ernest Shackleton's expedition in M'Murdc Sound, started north on February 22 and sighted the New Zealand coast twelve days later. There was a serious delay ni the following year owing to the protracted journey of the southern party, and it was not until March i that the Nimrod was able to leave the sound. New , ico had begnn to form, and the little ship narrowly escaped being locked up for tn< winter. The expedition managed to roacli open water on March 10, and arrived ofl Stewart Island on March 22, after a slower passage than the Terra Nova would be likely to make. There would be nc cause for any serious alarm even if wt received no news at all from the south this year. Such a mischance as tht "freezing in" of Captain Scott's vessel need not entail any inconvenience to the expedition, which has ample stores at its disposal to provide for such a contingency, and the Terra Nova is well fitted to undergo the test Of a winter's impriS' onment in the ic?. In the absence ol any definite information, however; ii probably would be considered necessarj to dispatch a relief shin next December but. that is a- possibility that, need noi be discussed just yet. We hope htal the next few days will bring tidings frorc tho southern regions.
