WANTED!
FIVE THOUSAND. WIVES; Canada, makes the announcement that sho renuiros 5000-young British girls us wives tov her settlors. Thoro. aro in tho Dominion something like 30,000 men, successful emigrants, who aro willing, oven anxious, to provide girls with good homes. In tho first instance, an officer ot the Canadian Northern Eailwav Company has been dispatched to England to select 5000 young women of irrcproacbablo character. He is accompanied by four or five ladies, who will help in the work of selection. Tho girls aro to be good housekceicrs, and go to Canada as domestic servants. Tho situations m which thev are placed on arrival are abovo suspicion, and from these, if they wish, they can afterwards marry -tho prosperous young' farmers.. So far,, the scheme is answering admirably. Canada is getting a magnificent advertisement," and many .young women with few opportunities will, presumably, get good liusbands. It has become fairly difficult now for the-emigration agent to capture the domestic servant, and one cannot hell) suggesting that behind this scheme for obtaining 5000 wives is tho much more important one of obtaining very many domestics. The newspapers liavo taken the quest of Mr. Howell, the immigration agent in charge of the matter, up with warmth. All over England his mission is receiving attention, and- it will bo a very dull girl who does not hear of it, and a very contented, one who is not attracted by tho pictures which are being drawn of life in tho Dominion. Mr. Howell travels about, giving his illustrated lectures, whilo his lady assistants, follow up and interview the girls. As far as possible, Canada is endeavouring to obtain country girls, and so ensuring that her 1 new citizens will hot feel to the same extent tho loneliness of Western Canada after city life. Australia has nothing in its farthest out-back to compare with the life in winter in,tho west of Canada. It is in its scheme- o fthe five thousand wives that the Dominion shines as an advertiser. ' Some fertile brain seems ever at work to I teep her well before the emigrating public.
