Only 27 were "wind-jammers," nr sailing ships, and I heir tonnage was SWI. 'Die steamer tonnage, as shown in Lloyd's annual report, was 1,137,738. Circular letters offering remuneration for news about people well known in society, and asking especially for items of "scandal" for uss in American newspapers, have recently been sent to butlers, West End physicians, and others by a lady signing; herself "Harriet Churchill," and giving an address in Birmingham. It now appears that the letters were the result of a carefully-planned hoax by certain writers who had a grievance against editors in genera!, "Harriet Churchill" lieing a purely fictitious person. A butler wrote to "The Times" explaining that "it would lie best for everybody concerned (using a Latin nhrase) to cum grano salis"! A thousand tramcar drivers and conductors and taxi-cab drivers attended a special service at Kennington. The lessons were read by a tramcar conductor and a taxi-cab driver.
