It now appears that the letters were the result of a carefully-planned hoax by certain writers who had a grievance against editors in genera!, "Harriet Churchill" lieing a purely fictitious person. A butler wrote to "The Times" explaining that "it would lie best for everybody concerned (using a Latin nhrase) to cum grano salis"! A thousand tramcar drivers and conductors and taxi-cab drivers attended a special service at Kennington. The lessons were read by a tramcar conductor and a taxi-cab driver.
