MEAT TRADE SCHEME.

POSITION OF FREEZING COM- , PAKIKS. • ' ' . . [To Tjie Editor.] Sir,—l notice in your report of the criticism of the above scheme, at tho meeting of the General Committee of the i'eilding A. and 1 , . Association, that disappointment was .expressed that tho scheme was not supported-by'the freezing companies. As i am told that this has been in many cases construed to mean that the freezing, companies have refrained from such support, I wish to say that the companies in Wellington district were not invited to give their support,. nor were they invited to tho conference, of which they were not even advised. And, as showing that they were not considered in any. way essential, I may point to .Hie foljowih? remark of Mr. Lyfnar's to the Minister:— "What was wanted here was a representative body of about twelve from different parts of. the Dominion, representing producers only, and excluding freezing companies, as the latter had their own of- ■• gnnisation, and wero well protected." The companies are far from being indifferent to the conduct of the trade, and have been and are still, at their own cost, taking steps to ensnro better conditions. • • . . ■ :.■.■■ I notice reference wa? mad?, to the representative who may be sent Home by the producers, having only 15 per cent, of the export, under his control, bnt from the-informatiop. I. have been able to get together I question if there is even.so large.a percentage as 15 per cent, shipped Home on. account of the actunl producer. I am sorry that the conference did not invite discussion by and with freeziiiE; companies, as perhaps a more intimate knowledge of the practical side of the industry would have prevented some misapprehension?. . . . . •' Tours faithfully. ' 'WAITER G. ? FOSTER, Managing Director. Wellington Meat Export 'Co;,~:Ltd.
