Athcnic, which left Wellington for London on February 23, continued her journey from Rio dc Janeiro on Sunday afternoon last. LARGE CARGO OF APPLES. FOR lUO AND MONTE VIDEO. On board the R.M.S. Arawa, which arrived from London, via Cape Town and ilobart, yesterday, there is an exceptionally large cargo of apples from Hobart. These are to be transhipped to the R.M.S. Coriuthie, leaving Wellington for London, viaTcnerlffc, Itio do Janeiro, and Monte Video, to-morrow. The shipment consists of 54C0 cases of applos for Rio and also 200 bags of potatoes, 200 cases of pears, aud 51C0 cases of npplee for Mnnio Video. This makes a lot-'il of 10,500 cases of apples, besides the other lines. N.Z.S. CO.'S STEAMERS. This afternoon the Orari is expected to leave Waitara for Wellington, and is duo hern to-morrow morning. After taking in home cargo the vessel leaver port on Friday afternoon for LyHelton. Messrs. liannatyne and Co., local agents fir Ilia Tyscr Line, have received advice which etiiles thai the chartered steamer Cranley continued her journey from New Vork to Wellington from Auckland at 11.45 a.m. yesterday. The vessel is due here tomorrow evening, and, after discharging 6CO tons of WellKiprlon cargo, will leave on Saturday for Lyltcltou and Dunediu.

LADY HOKUMS GOING NORTH. The defence steamer Lady Roberts leaves Dunedin to-day for Auckland, where she will bo stationed, for a time at any rate. The I.arty Roberts was stationed at Auckland hei'ore she went, south to carry nut defence and other di'.tivs in Ot.igo Harbour ahout four years ago. Captain Cashman, who has had charge of the Lady Rnboris for the past three years, takCG her north. A 35ft. oil-launch from the north is tn take the Lady Roberts's place in Otago Harbour. ARAWA'S GOOD STEAMING. FROM LONDON IN 41 DAYS. Shortly before 9 a.m. yesterday the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's R.M.S. Arawa, which bad arrived from London on the previous evening, berthed at the Queen's Wharf No. 1 south, and at once commenced discharging her Home cargo. During the whole of the voyage out the vessel experienced exceptionally tine weather, no gales being met with from the time she left London until arrival. Speaking to a reporter shortly after the vessel berthed the second officer (Mr. C. M. Andrews) stated that, it was the most remorkabln trip that he or any of his brother officers had experienced bo far as the weather was concerned. - A report, of the voyage states that the Arawa left London at 5 p.m. on February 3, and cleared Plymouth the following evening for Tcneriffe, port being made i on the morning of February 9. The same afternoon the- vessel took her departure for Cape Town, and reached the South African port at 7.25 a.m. on February 24. Here W0 tons of cargo from the wrecked steamer Aotea was taken aboard, some for Wellington and some for Lyttelton, and. twelve hours later, the Arawa left for Hobart, reaching there at 9 a.m. on March 15. After discharging 680 tons of cargo, and disembarking ICO passengers, the vessel resumed her voyage to Wellington at 6.10 p.m. on March 16. arriving at anchor in t-ho stream at Wellington at 8 p.m. on Monday. Captain Bolloiw, master of the Government steamer llinumoa, now undergoing overhaul and survey at Lyttolton, arrived in Wellington yesterday morning. Captain G. G. Smith, Royal Naval Registrar, will leave for Auckland to-morrow lor the purposs of enrolling recruits for the Naval Reserve. H.M.S. Pioneer, firUl ship, is due at Auckland from Sydney on Monday next. /'Fairplay" states that an American engineer is said to have invented a method of reversing tho engines of a steamer going at full speed by means of a lever placed on the captain's bridge. It i 3 especially applicable to turbines. Mr. Crowe, who has been ashore at Auckland sitting for a chief officer's certificate, has joined the Squall as second officer at Auckland. Mr. Robertson, e-ccond officer of the Squall, transferred to the Haupiri in a similar capacity. Tho Coriuna, which arrived here early yesterday morning from -New Plymouth and Onchunga. has transhipped 11.0 CO boxes of butter into the Corintluc. It is for the Home market. With part cargo of Westport coal the Union Company's steamer Wanaka is expected to leave Lyttelton for Wcllingv.n ~n Fri'Jay. She is due in port on Saturday morning. Tho local office of the Tr nion Compsnhas been advised that the Arahura arrived at Wcet-port from Oreymouth at 4 a.m. yesterday. She left again at 11 a.m. for Nelson, Picton, and Wellington, aud arrives hero to-night. About 1 p.m. to-day the Westport Coal Company's steamer Reguhis is expected in port from Westport. She brings a full load of coal. Arriving at- Wellington at 12.45 p.m. yesterday, the 'fysar Line's steamer Muritai completes Homeward loading, and iu expected to sail for London, via- Las Parnias, at daybreak on Saturday. Bound for this port with coal, the Union Company's collier Whnngape was to have left Westport at midnight- yesterday. Upon completing discharge, the vessel leaves Wellington for Sydney with live stock. She sails on Tuesday next, March 28. An expected arrival in port, from Tokoraaru Bay on Thursday is tho Blackball Company's steamer Ngahcrc. She comes to tako a load of machinery to the company's mines on the West Coast. The Auckland Dock, which has been out of commission for several weeks, is now fit for Gervico again. The caisson has been undergoing extensive repairs, and having had to be docked in the dock itself, a. temporary wooden cofferdam had to be constructed to close the entrance. The dock has now accumulated a good deal of work, and will bo occupied throughout next month. At 12.20 p.m. yesterday the coastal steamer Kahu left Wellington for' Picton to load chaff for East Coast bays. She proceeds io Napier before coming back to Wellington. Clyde, schooner, cleared Wellington yeeterday morning for the Chathams. She is taking down a load of coal and stores for Mr. M/Leau's fishing station at Kaingaroa. The Otago Harbour Board.are going in for a steel twin-screw tug and salvage steamer. The work of surveying and overhauling the Union Company's training chip Dartford is proceeding (states the "Press"), and it is expected that the vessel will be ready to go into dry dock next Wednesday week. A number of the deck planks are being replaced with new timbers, and the decks arc being recaulked fore and alt. Tho whole of tho lining of tho vessel's hold is being renewed, and her plates and frames are being chipped and painted. The tittings for the extra berths for the new cadets are being made in Port Chalmers, and a number of carpenters and joiners are coming up tlm week to build the new berths in the after 'tween decks, which have been got ready. Several of the cadets have returned from holiday leave, and ten new boys will bo joining during the next lew days. l'o-day tho Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamer Rangatira is expected to leave Lyttelton for ivapier, Gisborne, Wellington and Timaru. She is due here on March 30, and sails finally from Lyttelton for London on April 8.
