Ihonipson, of Wellington, arrived in Masterton this morning after an eight day's exploration tour of tho iarania Ranges. They proceeded along, the Ohau River to tho summit, 1 and thence descended itno the Mangahao \ alley, following the ranges and peaks until they readied Mount Holdsworth. the journey is said to have been full' of interest, the view obtainable from somo of tho peak-tops being magnifi'f' 1 ? Party discovered' no trace ol the lima, although they saw other forms of. mountain fauna in abundance. Much sympathy ,is felt for Mr. and' Mrs. 11. J. Jaeksou, whoso son Leopold died yesterday at the age of fourteen years. A concert is to bo held in the Tows Hall on Wednesday evening next in aid of Miss Tlielma Petersen, who" is going abroad to complete her musical studies. , A pleasant surprise was sprung upon tjio patients of the Masterton Hospital y?®t_°rday, when the Very Rev. Dean M Ivenna, accompanied by several pupils of St. Patrick's Convent and Miss Simpson, of Wellington, visited tho institution and contributed a pro« granimo of 'vocal and instrumental' music. , meeting of managers of tho Masterton Technical School was held last evening, when a letter was read from tho Ldueation Denartment, defining tho terms "trustee and subscriber," as used m tho regulations under tho Act in. connection with tho election of man-' £P ra o 'ir le^ fcr * ho rcatl from °f. Napier, explaining, that it would bo impossible for him' to tako charge of the wool-classing during tho ensuing term, but recommending his son for thp nosition. A'' suo-committco was set up" for the purpose of developing • a scheme for tho.' establishment of wool classos in the I district. A s< iuad of swimmers, belonging to Mr. A. Snowball's, life-saving class, wore put through various examinations bj' Mr. A. J. Soinerville, of the Royal Life-Saving Society, at tlio Alico and, Christina liaths yesterday. Thero wero sixteen candidates altogether, including eleven, girls and women. ■ > Tho Masterton ratepayers and burgesses rolls for the present- year have bewi closed. There is an increase of\ 140 names in tho number of ratepayers, whilst tho burgesses "list has increased' from 988 to 1583. On tho Mastcrton bowling green yesterday Mr. C.. Perry defeated Mr.'Wj Pragnell in tho final for the champion.sliip singles by 22 to 14. In tho competition for the Pragnell Stars, W. M.. Colo defeated F. Staples bv 26 to 8. A bush fire of rather an extensive nature is raging at Kopuaranga, on' the eastern side of tho railway.
